When you first enter Amalfi, you are greeted with a warm smile and an inviting atmosphere that gives one the impression of stepping into a traditional family run establishment. I love these kinds of Italian restaurants as I usually look forward to a hearty meal with excellent service.
However... There are three fundamental problems with this restaurant. Firstly the menu looked uncanny to the Strada menu. Seriously it was as if they’d taken a Strada menu and stuck an Amalfi logo on the front cover. I know what you’re thinking it’s an Italian restaurant so there will be similarities, but for God’s sake is Italian cuisine so limited? There is no sense of originality or excitement in the menu. When the food arrived, it was bland and sub-standard.
Secondly service is glacial. My friend and I ordered two courses. We waited 20 minutes for one out of two starters to arrive; we waited another 25 minutes for our main course to arrive which was only brought to us when I complained to the manager. He was very apologetic when he brought the dishes to our table but that should have been the job of the waiter not the manager as the waiter was at fault.
Thirdly, unless the appetisers (olives, bread, etc) are complimentary, don’t bring them to the table. The waiter brought us olives which were tasty and being that we waited so long for our starter we ate them. If we knew were going to be charged for them we wouldn’t have ate them.
I was also furious to see that the waiter was consulting with his manager when I refused to pay the optional service charge. What service? If anything we should have had money off for waiting over 45 minutes for food (I’m not including my starter as it was only two bits of bread with soggy peppers and anchovies).
Amalfi needs to seriously get it together as there are plenty of decent Italian restaurants on Old Compton St that will put them out of business.
Have been to the Amalfi twice now for a pre theatre meal. We found the staff very attentive and the food excellent. We now go out of our way to eat here when seeing a show

Good food, good service, great atmosphere and resonably priced.
five of us went on a Friday night. though busy it wasn't packed.
took 10 minutes to get a menu, then another 20 minutes before they took our order.
when I waiter did go pass it was only to drop dirty cutlery from some plates he was clearing off another table down my back. no apology.
ordered drinks, a starter of bread with olive oil for all of us, and then pizzas. drinks took 30 minutes to arrive, the pizza arrived after another 15 minutes, but no starters of bread and oil.
The Pizza were lukewarm to cold. how food can arrive so late and then be cold is a mystery to me.
appalling service and then tried to force us to pay the discretionary service. had to have a full on argument before they took it off.
avoid, avoid, avoid.
This is one of my top 5 restaurants in London, because the food and atmosphere are great. Welcoming staff, like the French Olivier Martinez look alike and the lovely girls, as well as some of the Italian older male waiters.
I took some Canadian friends of mine there last week and they were delighted.
It's a great place to be with friends or a girl/boyfriend. I like the candles and the dim light are a nice.
I've been going there for a few years and still get excited at the idea of going there for a meal.
The desserts are awsome.
visited 3/11/07. Service was appalling. Waited 30 minutes for menu and to order drinks. Starters were ok main meals terrible. Ordered a rare steak got a well done indifferent piece of meat. would not recommend to anyone and certainly would not visit again
I went to Amalfi on Friday night with two friends. We discovered it by chance and had a great night. The service was great, food was good and the atmosphere was fun. We weren't hurried and ended up staying from 8pm to 12am. Amalfi Restaurant is the perfect place for a fun and reasonably priced evening out with friends. I look forward to going back.
My wife and I visited Amalfi Restaurant at about 5pm in July. It was quiet, but the staff were excellent and so was the food. Highlights were the King Prawn starter and meatballs. Both were well presented, perfectly cooked, decent portions and served with style.
Coffee was good too. We'll be back to Amalfi Restaurant.
My partner and I visited Amalfi restaurant last Saturday, after not being there since before the refurbishment.
We loved the new interior and found the atmosphere cosy and warm. We were greeted by a smiling waitress who served us our drinks while we looked at the menu.
The food arrived quickly, my Suprema Gamberi was delicious and my partner loved thier Blognese Grande. After sharing a Chicolata Napolitana we didnt want to leave Amalfi Restaurant - it was truly excellent.
Amalfi's looks like an old fashioned cosy trattoria and looks like a restaurant that has been around for a while. There was some confusion about our starter because when we asked why my companion's soup hadn't shown up we had a long-winded explanation, my starter salad was ok though. The house red tasted as though it had been watered down unfortunately and my ricotta canneloni had that blackly blasted taste of something that had come out of the freezer - it was sticky and tasteless. My companion said his spaghetti with tomato sauce was ok but come on - this is supposed to be an Italian. How expensive can ingredients for tomato sauce and decent homemade pasta be? The service was ok, but overall Amalfi's is resting on its laurels and the food is distinctly below average.
Amalfi is a perfect place to go if you fancy good food and outstanding service. The place has a real good atmosphere and friendly staff. Amalfi is a top spot.
Amalfi Restaurant is busy and bustling and has a real Italian Piazza feel with its outdoor seating area and cosy interior. The restaurant isn't fancy but the service is wonderful and friendly. You are made to feel welcome as soon as you walk in to Amalfi Restaurant. The small touches of service made the meal all the more special. The food was simple but tasted wonderful. The biggest surprise was the price - it was very reasonable.
Amalfi Restaurant was very poor. We got slapdash service and food that most Italians would be ashamed of. I sent my mussels back because they were cold and they were returned seemingly having been microwaved.
The pizzas were burnt dry and tasteless and the pasta was lukewarm. Amalfi Restaurant is a horrible place. Avoid at all costs!
Dreadful service and below average food. The starter was cold and the main course bland and uninspiring. To make matters worse all 3 waiters that served us were rude and slow. I refused to pay the service charge at the end of the night and rightfully so. I will most certainly not be going back.
