The ViewLondon Review
This small-scale, intimate restaurant in Camden has been in business for ages, and it's no wonder – there is something truly special about this charming dining spot that features some of the best Greek cuisine in town.
The Venue
Andy’s Taverna is easy to spot as it’s the only white-fronted building with a blue awning in the street. Indoors the decor is a bit understated (not the right restaurant to impress a date!), with very simple tables and chairs and plain white tablecloths. Somehow it feels homey though, and the white-walled courtyard is lovely in sunny weather.
The Atmosphere
Although service seems consistently slow and confused throughout the meal, don't let it spoil your dinner. Focus instead on the decor of the room, the walls painted in traditional white and marine blue and covered in family pictures and other memorabilia. Most of the customers are Greeks that regularly visit the venue and add to the buzz of the place. Soon enough, you’ll be completely absorbed in this Mediterranean atmosphere and it won’t bother you if the main courses take a bit longer than they should to arrive.
The Food
Andy’s Taverna offers a two course set menu for £6.95 weekdays at lunchtime. The same menu is available for dinner, but price goes up to £11, and there are also a la carte and party menus. From the a la carte menu, the endless list of starters will leave you spoilt for choice. Grilled Greek sausages, halloumi, vegetable and seafood dishes are all priced between £2.95 and £6.95 and come with bread. The vegetarian platter (£9.50) is also a perfect sharer for two and is an outstanding mix of vegetarian moussaka, grilled halloumi cheese, spanakopita, cheese-filled grilled vegetables, dolmades and Greek salad.
Fish dishes are a highlight on the menu and include sea bream and sea bass (£12.95). The grilled swordfish (£8.95) is perfectly cooked and delicious. Meat dishes include traditional moussaka (£8.95) and chicken, pork and lamb kebabs (£8.95) and the very popular baked lamb kleftiko dish (£9.95), the restaurant’s speciality. Main courses come with a refreshing Greek salad. Desserts, like baklava, havla and ice cream aren’t necessarily worth saving room for but are fine if you’re craving something sweet after your meal.
The Drink
The wine list offers a choice of Greek and Cypriot bottles starting at £12.95, including Retsina at £13.95. Continental wines are slightly more expensive but still priced well below £20. There is also the Cypriot beer Keo on the menu as well as a classic selection of liqueurs.
The Last Word
The service may be hit and miss but the authentic, laid back atmosphere and good value menu makes up for it.
