nice pub that is generally quite popular. Atmosphere is often simply great and the drinks are good. I do not know about the food. Do not leave your iphone/... on the bar counter or handbags standing somewhere though - things go missing quite regularly too here. worth a visit, very nice outside area too.
Nice pub and outside area but I was completely let down at the end of the evening to find my handbag had been stolen. After speaking to the police they say it is a regular occurrence at Anglsea Arms in Selwood Terrace. Another handbag had got stolen on the same night as me (24 Aug 2010). There should be a sign in the girls toilets to watch your handbags since the staff there are clearly aware of this BIG problem. This would make you extra careful. The CC TV cameras unfortunately do not cover the entire pub area and so obviously there was no filming at the table I was sitting at (the last one on your right on your way to the toilets).
We had a meal here for my Birthday last Monday. The food was delicious but the service was terrible.
I don't know whether the waitress was over stretched but even if she was, she could have been a little apologetic about it.
We were probably too polite but sort of had to do her job for her. When we arrived our table was still set for 12 so we had to wait for it all to be rearranged, even though I'd emailed on the fri to let them know we'd be 8.
It took an hour to get our orders placed and even then the waitress had to go around the table twice as got confused.
When starters came my friend who had ordered only a main was brought this as a starter, when it very obviously was not one, and had to sit through the rest of the meal with nothing in front of her while we all had our mains.
At the end of each course we had to wait for ages for the plates to be cleared and I don't think half of the main plates were gone even when we left, and we didn't leave quickly.
We had to wait for ages and ages for the wine to arrive. When it did it was disgusting (one of the bottles we chose was admittedly house white but you can usually be assured that places don't serve terrible wine as their house wine as people judge them by their choice of house. It cost about £15 but tasted like it had been bought for £4, max) - I left the pub sober, which I wasn't expecting to do!
We had to ask again and again for water. We were just not waited on!
I love the Anglesea for drinks but unfortunately I have been very, very much put off the idea of ever eating there again.
A shame as you put quite a bit of effort into choosing somewhere you think will be nice to get your friends along to for your birthday!
I am quite confused, because on first impression, this pub seems nice and the reviews of it seem to indicate that it is worth a visit. However, the food is nothing to write home about and the food service was down-right rude (bar was ok)... in fact, it was laughable.
Apparently there’s another Anglesea Arms in Shepherd’s Bush, but I’m not sure if they’re related, as this is the only Anglesea Arms I’ve ever visited in London. It’s a typical traditional pub – not much to write home about, but not much to complain about either. They also don’t play music, which is a good or bad thing depending on what you fancy.
We discovered the Anglesea Arms quite by accident as we were staying in a flat in Onlsow Square on a short let in January of 2003. As we are wont to do we were walking in the neighborhood and there it was. We went in the smoke filled pub and then down to the lovely restaurant below. The service and the food were excellent. Delightful menu items. The ales were great as well. Highly recommended!
