The ViewLondon Review

Review byStephen Farmer16/07/2007
Despite glaring grammatical errors, Apostrophe’s Gallic flair marks it as the superior alternative to many of the larger cafe and coffee chains in the capital.

The Venue
Squeezing itself into one of the Brunswick’s flat pack premises, Apostrophe immediately appears uncomfortably cosy, and a queue that nudges the entrance hardly helps. But with ample seating outside and an interior that’s well laid out, it manages to maintain the relaxed atmosphere of a modern French cafe. Inside plays host to stylish contemporary fittings whilst the al fresco area matches the food in being nicely traditional. This juxtaposition works well and fits the Apostrophe ethos - a boutique-style eatery fit for 21st century London.

The Atmosphere
Perfectly suited for quick lunch breaks and takeaways, Apostrophe is a busy little place with fast moving queues and speedy turnover. Lunchtimes can be quite hectic but when this settles, a relaxed atmosphere shines through. Sitting inside means you can stir your senses with the smell of ground coffee and freshly baked bread, whilst there’s a pleasant continental feel to the seating area outside.

The Food
This is where Apostrophe really excels, and clearly why lunchtime takeaways are so popular. The decidedly continental menu benefits from employing excellent produce put together with admirable simplicity. Gourmet sandwiches are justifiably popular, and are beautifully prepared on site throughout the day. Examples follow the French theme but aren't afraid of borrowing from Italy, Greece and even from us Brits. Therefore expect delicious concoctions like the colmar; a toasted panini with salami, rocket, mayonnaise and chilli jam. Pastries and cakes abound for those with a sweet tooth, and are just as impressive as the savoury options.

The Drink
There are no alcoholic options at Apostrophe but the coffee is intoxicatingly good and seems to have garnered quite a reputation. Expect all the usual choices, except much better, and with genuine continental froth. If the coffee’s too strong then there’s a selection of freshly squeezed juices, including orange, carrot, apple and pear, all of which prove superbly crisp companions to the food. And if you fancy something deliciously nutritious, try one of the fresh smoothies.

The Last Word
Proving that the ubiquitous cafe chains really are to be avoided, Apostrophe offers food and drink of genuine quality, at excellent prices.
