Set back from Haverstock Hill that runs through the heart of affluent Belsize Park lies a classic Italian restaurant that should not be missed.

The Venue
The building is obviously a converted residence - in fact, the menus either side of the front steps are the only real indication that this is in fact not one. Ask has a welcoming facade with a stone pathway and outdoor seating adorning the front patio area, heated in the winter by two large outdoor heaters. As you step inside the narrow bar area leads through to the right to the main eating area, with an upper area at the front and a lower conservatory area to the rear.

The Atmosphere
Ask has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Although the lighting is too bright, the quiet background music and friendly staff make sure your visit is comfortable as possible. The crowd varies from the weeknight after-work crowd to larger parties on the weekend, and like most Italian restaurants, it is a popular spot for group outings.

The Food
The food is very typically Italian-style pizzas, pastas and salads. You can choose one of their own freshly prepared pizzas, or create your own from their list of toppings, which are then freshly baked and with toppings that are generously portioned. The salads are equally impressive with perfect ratio of filling to salad leaves and not, as is too often the case, a bowl of lettuce and rocket drowned in vinaigrette. The pastas, in particular the Penne Saporite (penne pasta with salmon, leeks and mushroom) are rich and cooked perfectly al dente.

The Drink
Ask offers an extensive list of white, red, rose and sparkling wines as you would expect from an Italian restaurant, and a choice of Italian bottled beers as well.

The Last Word
There is nothing really unusual about Ask, but it offers good Italian food in a friendly and homely atmosphere.
