Bad aspects:
1) Horribly rude manager- This manager was the rudest I've met at any restaurant in my life. He insisted on arguing with me in front of my guest about the reservation I had placed over the phone. Their staff failed to capture relevant details, but he instead blamed the mistake on me. I found that to be off-putting and completely unprofessional, especially when he said he didn't want to be a "hard-#ss" but went on to exhibit this sort of behaviour. We nearly walked out because he was so rude to us.
2) Poor waitstaff- not very attentive and unresponsive to requests
3) Ordinary food- I found the food here to be utterly disappointing. The prawn roll appetizers were no better than what you could get in Chinatown. The fish was overcooked, and the dessert was very oily and difficult to eat.
4) Overpriced- For what you get and the quality of the food, this restaurant was a rip-off. In principle, I don't mind paying £75 for a 3-course meal, but I certainly expect it to be food I can't make on my own or pick up from a fast-food restaurant.
5) Careless presentation- The dessert was very generic. Serving ice cream at a place like this is fine, but it needs to be in a serving vessel that's not flat and a spoon smaller than the size of the actual scoop. Also, the pisang roti canai I had for dessert was very difficult to eat with the giant spoon they provided. For several minutes, I tried to get a fork & knife from the staff, and by the time they finally provided it, the ice cream had melted.
The best restaurant on planet earth and beyond!
The food is divine and the service is on point!
The decor of the restaurant is lovely and the romantic atmosphere makes it all the more better!
My partner and I love Awana, and we cant actually seem to stop going there!
The best Malaysian restaurant in this world.
The food is amazing, service excellent and atmosphere romantic/intimate.
Really do love this restaurant and will be back soon!
I adore this restaurant.
Awana has never once failed to impress me. The food, service and intimate atmosphere is just perfect.
The food is honestly so delicious and mouth-watering. I always order satay, roti and salt and pepper prawns! They really are my favourite dishes there. They serve some great curries there too and their desserts are to die for. They have a huge selection of ice creams and sorbets. Some of which include: chili and lemongrass, star anis and blood orange , chocolate and lemongrass etc. Very amazing desserts! My favourite dessert has to be the 'roti tissue'- This is crispy Malaysian bread with chocolate poured on it served with coconut ice cream. For chocolate lovers this is heaven!
I will definitely be returning again soon!
Avoid Awana at all costs! Despite a good atmosphere and a friendly service, the food is absolute rubbish. Don't fall victim to the horrendous menu, featuring the so called "malaysian Journey", which is a combination of starters, entree and desert (all for 50 quid per person). Having had and enjoyed Malaysian cuisine on numerous occasions before, I felt physically sick after each of the dishes from Malaysian Journey. The satay tasted like no satay I had before, all burned and oily -- no amount of sauce could save it. Then came the sour fruit with some sauce to dip it -- again, this was the first time I tasted anything like this. I can only compare it to eating ice cream with Tabasco sauce -- a new sensation I guess. Then came the wonton soup (it was ok, but one could clearly get a better one from the next door Chinese takeaway, and ten times cheaper I bet) and lamb ribs -- what a pathetic dish, all oily and inedible. As my expectations gradually dropped to zero, the main course appeared -- beef curry with rice and assortment of vegetables. I can't say that rice and veggies were any good, but I can most definitely say that beef curry sucked real bad. I basically stopped eating after the first spoon. I guess the desert, which was made of cheesecake and ice cream / sorbet, was ok - but on second thought, it was not good just like the rest of the "malaysian Journey". Adding insult to injury, the red wine -- a Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon -- was complete rubbish, and it felt like a waste at 27 quid a bottle. When I complained, the waitress took the "discretionary" 12% service charge off, but I was still liable to pay for my and my wife's dinner which came in at 130 odd pounds! So in summary - please do not feel tempted to go to Awana. It is the biggest waste of money (and time). Go elsewhere and you will not regret.
Went for a valentines meal with boyfriend. Although it was a very busy night for them the staff were nothing but helpful. Pricey but very worth it. Food was amazing, but as we are both veggies I can only speak for the veggie food. Cocktails were fab. Staff were great, and manager came round to see if we were ok and gave us complimentary spa vouchers. Lovely evening!
Oh dear - not sure about the previous reviews at all.
As a gal brought up in Singapore i think this is a fantastic place doing authentic high quality Malay food.
It's not cheap but it's the real thing.Otak otak, satays, sambaal, the beef randang. It is hard to choose from though that said my BF and i always end up having the same things (and over ordering).
It's by no means cheap but it is the best Malaysian food i have had outside of Asia.Staff are generally friendly and eager to please.
Cocktails look good but as i don't drink am happy to stick to the excellent mocktails which change periodically.
I decided to go to Awana as it was my father's 65th birthday. I also ordered a birthday cake for my father’s 65th birthday by email.
This was not acknowledged by any of the staff. When we first arrived we were early and sat at the bar.
We were then promptly seated right at the front entrance. This table was in a poor location as people and the waiters/waitress were constantly walking past our table.
Furthermore it was extremely cramped as people were continuously brushing past me and the waiters were always touching me when walking past.
On the whole the food was fine; however the seafood batter was too oily and had not been drained properly.
The ayam berisi – chicken with prawn was a strange combination and did not seem to work. The stuffed prawns inside the chicken were overcooked.
I was extremely unhappy with the service and atmosphere. I could not enjoy my food as the waiters/waitresses were constantly brushing past me and touching me.
I felt that we had the worst table. The service was also rushed and somewhat clumsy, as plates and cutlery were dropped near us.
I felt that I could not celebrate my father’s birthday in that sort of atmosphere. I do realise that Saturday is a busy day – but when people are within touching distance of you whilst eating it is very unpleasant.
At the end of the meal, the waitress asked me if I enjoyed myself and was surprised when I said I was not happy at all.
She quickly processed our bill and did not ask me why I was unhappy. I felt that this was not appropriate and did not demonstrate good customer service at all.
She did not wear a name badge so I did not get her name. However she was wholly inappropiate. When explaining to her that I requested a birthday cake by email, she replied, 'You should have said so on the phone'.
She sought to justify the problem rather than resolve it. Only ti
