The ViewLondon Review
Usually Polish food isn't seen as hip and trendy. Well, not until now at least. Baltic will definitely change your opinion of Polish cuisine thanks to its stylish design, outstanding service and excellent food - this is a place that can’t be missed.
The Venue
As you walk in, the Amber Bar sits to the left. This long, sleek and sexy bar is great for an after work cocktail or drink before dinner. The décor here is minimalist and ultra modern. When you enter the dining area your eyes are drawn to the high vaulted ceiling with all its skylights and light wood beans. Walls are painted white and kept bare, and there are various ceiling fans hanging from the beams. Tables have simple white table cloths, and chairs are cushioned in black fabric.
The Atmosphere
Staff are attentive and will make suggestions or explain dishes to those unfamiliar with Polish food. The crowd is hip and trendy, showcasing just what a hip and trendy area SE1 has swiftly become.
The Food
It's all pleasingly authentic, so if you're not au fait with Polish cuisine, this is a great introduction to a cuisine that's diverse and very intriguing. Watermelon, broad beans, mint, and feta salad (£6) is a refreshing and satisfying starter even though it sound a little like it could complicate the plate. It works though, with the juicy, sweet, watermelon and mint balancing out the salty feta cheese, while the broad beans give it substance. Peirogi (£9.50) are light and delicious dumplings filled with potato, cheese and spring onion, pan fried in butter. It's one of those traditional Polish dishes that you just have to try. Leniwe (£11) are dumplings filled with wild mushrooms and cheese, before being pan fried in butter and chives. They are smaller and shaped differently from the peirogi, but are every bit as tasty. The wild mushrooms give this dish an earthy and rich taste.
If you are looking for something meatier, try the Siberian pelmeni (£10.50) - small dumplings filled with veal and pork, and pan fried in butter and chives. These hearty little appetisers are perfect for sharing with the table. For mains, the whole grilled mackerel with red peppers, capers and lemongrass (£13.50) is amazing. The fresh fish of the day is brought to the table for your consideration (always a nice touch) and the mackerel is cooked perfectly, flaking on the fork beautifully. The vegetables on the side make this a delicious yet healthier dish. If you fancy some sides then the new potatoes with sour cream, dill and spring onions (£3.50) are must-try. The dill is not too overpowering and gives the tender, warm potatoes a distinct flavour.
The Drinks
Vodka, and lots of it, naturally. It's not all Poland's favourite tipple though, Baltic has a great selection of wines (bottles ranging from £15 to £45), exotic cocktails, beers and ciders. But if you are serious about your vodka, this is your spot, and make sure you try a shot of the wisniowka (cherry) vodka - it's very good indeed.
The Last Word
If you are curious about Eastern European cuisine then make your way over to Southwark where Baltic is sure to make you a fan of Polish food. The monthly changing menu and the uniquely designed restaurant are certainly worth experiencing.
