The ViewLondon Review
Belonging to the popular chain of Davy’s Wine Bars and Restaurants, Bangers Too is a charming venue, conveniently located near Monument tube station and serving a selection of traditional British dishes in refined surroundings. The VenueBoth the pub and the restaurant in this impressive Victorian building can be found down a narrow staircase which feels like the secret passage to a Masonic lodge. The room hums with the warmth of old values with dark wood chairs and tables, distorted glass booths and ornate lamps protruding from burnt orange walls. There are large tables for the inevitable business lunches and other more intimate areas for couples.
The AtmosphereThe nature of the clientele means that certain traditions will continue such as the refusal to introduce supposedly ambient music to the room. The only sound here at Bangers Too is the classic, satisfied murmur of suited gentlemen with full stomachs talking about targets and deadlines. The space is much more popular with people who look after money than couples but the place does brisk business at lunchtimes and the pub is also very busy in the evenings. The staff are hugely attentive and guarantee friendly service throughout regardless of the volume of visitors.
The FoodRegulars seat themselves at the table and wave the offered menu away, requesting bangers and mash without hesitation. You would expect this restaurant to deliver on its signature dish and it does so with style. The mashed potatoes are delectably smooth with the unique flavour of the plump and juicy Cumberland sausages enhanced by the essential addition of thick and sweet onion gravy. An alternative would be the generous portions of beautifully tender, hand carved Alderton ham served with soft boiled potatoes in butter, dressed mixed salad and a mildly spicy yet simply divine piccalilli relish.
For starters, there are the usual suspects such as soup of the day, Scottish smoked salmon and a pate option - a wonderfully elegant pheasant with beetroot relish and baby figs in a rather dominating rum syrup. There are also a number of enticing pudding options including the treacle tart which is a lusciously rich and sweet offering accompanied by a sinful dollop of thick clotted cream, a symbol of both refined English behaviour and guilty pleasure.
The DrinkThe wine list is extensive and international with notable tipples being the non-oaked Ardeche Chardonnay, a striking white with more than a hint of acidic apple in the fusion, Waipara West Sauvignon Blanc, a fresh and smooth option enhanced by the delightful aroma of gooseberry, and the rewarding and decadent yet reasonably priced Davy’s Finest Claret.
The Last WordIf a tailor-made suit is not the required dress code at your place of work, don’t feel the need to cross this restaurant off your list. The quality of food is too high to forfeit.
