If you’re in the mood for drinks in South Kensington, Bar 190 has old fashioned charm and some great cocktails.

The Venue
Bar 190 is on the ground floor of The Gore Hotel, one of the most exclusive hotels in London. The decor isn’t out of the ordinary, but it’s classic and comfortable. The low leather seats, dark wood walls, antique-style lamps and big, thick candles make you feel like you’re in an old fashioned library.

One of Bar 190’s biggest features is Cinderella’s Carriage, a separated raised area toward the rear that’s curtained off from the rest of the crowd. Although the name might bring to mind pumpkins, princes and cheerful cartoon mice, in reality it’s a slightly more subdued affair. Think red velvet drapery, cushy banquettes and gold-trimmed pillows. This area is best reserved for a special occasion or a group outing, since it costs a pretty penny to rent. There's a minimum spend of £100.00, and the area also comes with your own personal footman.

The Atmosphere
Bar 190 is a place to talk quietly, not get drunk raucously. That said, although the clientele is posh there’s still a wide range of patrons. Young couples sit happily side by side with distinguished businessmen and relaxed hotel guests.

The Drink
There’s a decently large and very interesting cocktail list, with classics like mojitos and cosmopolitans alongside new inventions. Particularly recommended are the Swedish Spring Punch, with Absolute vanilla, blueberry liqueur, lemon juice and champagne, as well as the Venus, a fruity martini with lemon vodka and a big chunk of juicy watermelon. The rest of the drinks menu is enormous, with a big listing of top spirits, wines and champagnes.

The prices are towards the high end, with cocktails coming in at around £9.00 and champagne cocktails running about £11.00. If you live in the neighbourhood, though, you won’t bat an eye, whilst if you’re staying in the hotel for a special occasion you’ll probably be in the mood to splurge.

The Last Word
The Gore Hotel’s bar is a must-visit if you’re in the neighbourhood. It may be posh and pricey, but the drinks are delicious and worth every penny.
