The ViewLondon Review
Handily located for those in TW11, this Spanish cliche offers a decent enough selection of tapas and sangria although there will be no closing your eyes and imagining you’re in Barcelona. Nope, you’re in Teddington.
The Venue
Bar Estilo is clearly Spanish in theme from the outset – the large venue is so red it’s practically a smack in the face. Luckily, pretty hanging baskets, practical canopies to protect smokers from the rain and plenty of windows set in heavy wood rescue it from total tackiness. Well, almost. Inside the decor is altogether more subdued with seating for up to 100 diners and a separate bar area. Simple wooden tables and chairs, lots of exposed brick and delicate archways set the scene and offer a more authentic Spanish appeal.
The Atmosphere
Bar Estilo has an upbeat atmosphere with a clientele made up almost exclusively of locals. The staff are friendly and help to inject a Spanish skew into the atmosphere with their upbeat demeanour and they clearly get regulars in here. It’s also popular for families with a children’s menu that brings in the kids.
The Food
The menu is simple and free of flounce with main courses priced at just under £10. It’s the tapas menu that seems to do the best business, however, with dishes priced between £1.50 and £7. The addition of garlic bread with cheese isn’t very Spanish but is bolstered by a generous plate of crunchy nachos with a spicy black bean chilli, a slightly overcooked and rubbery deep fried calamari with a creamy aioli and spicy chicken wings with a fresh sour cream. Some Greek additions are rather bizarre though such as hummus and koftas. Perhaps they should stick with Spanish dishes.
The Drink
The sangria at Bar Estilo is reasonbly priced at £5 a glass or £13 a jug, and it covers four flavour varieties, including a rather sickly passionfruit and strawberry sangria. There is also a selection of rather unimaginative classics for £7 and Spanish favourites like daiquiris and caipirinhas, and a lengthy choice of red and white wines available by the glass and the bottle. A selection of bottled beers that include San Miguel, Stella Artois, Staropramen, Peroni, Kronenbourg, Estrella Damm, Budvar, Hoegaarden and Becks completes the selection.
The Last Word
Probably not worth making an effort to visit if you don’t live nearby, Bar Estilo isn’t a bad choice for locals if you fancy no-fuss tapas and a glass of sangria.
