Cellar bars can be a little hit and miss; Berties Bar gets it right, being located below one of the oldest pubs in Wimbledon – The Prince of Wales – but retaining a stylish, unpretentious air. For a bar, the beer and lager choice is excellent.

The Venue
Tucked down a side road, off of the main drag of Wimbledon High Street you will find Berties Bar – located in the cellar of the Prince of Wales. There is a small, rather uninspiring courtyard area as you enter the premises, which houses a couple of large tables; however it’s really nothing more than a glorified smokers' corner and isn’t really making the most of what could be an attractive outside space. Alternatively, you can enter via the pub.

Don’t be put off by the lack of horticultural finesse outside, as the interior is much more appealing. With dark subdued lighting, bare brickwork and large flagstones on the floor there is a definite rustic feel, which is a pleasant change to all the Metro Bars, popping up wherever you look. Only open after 6pm, this bar is popular with workers heading along for a drink after a hard day’s work, and with the twenty-to-thirtysomethings that visit Wimbledon at the weekend. Two large screen TVs keep sports fans happy, especially during Wimbledon Fortnight.

The Atmosphere
With funky house music pumping out over the speakers this is a hot spot for the younger clientele and great for groups; however, there are also several more private nooks and crannies, which are a great place for a more intimate drink. Open until midnight, there is no pressure to move onto somewhere else and can plot up for the evening if something or someone takes your fancy.

The Drink
Sporting the same drinks menu as in the upstairs Prince of Wales pub, the drinks menu at Berties Bar offers up a great choice of wine, with prices ranging from £11-£20. However, most remarkable about this bar is the huge selection of lager and beer on tap (with the influence of the pub upstairs being obvious) – and the low prices (the average pint here is just £2.80). Fosters, Kronenbourg, Kronenbourg Blanc, Stella, Becks, Guinness, John Smith, Strongbow, Budvar, Leffe are all on tap for lager lovers, and London Pride, IPA, Bombardier and Abbott are just a few of the ales available.

The Last Word
This is a great spot to visit for the young and young at heart. This urban bar has an intimate, rustic feel without being naff and too olde world try-hard.
