A successful steakhouse restaurant with branches including Notting Hill Gate, Belsize Park and Borough Market, Black and Blue turn out steak and meat dishes time and time again.

The Venue
This branch is positioned on Wigmore Street and is ideal for a pit-stop after a hard afternoon’s trundling through the shops in Oxford Street. The aesthetics inside are simple in keeping with the cuisine. A feature brick lined wall is matched by hardwood floors and comfortable black leather booths to provide a little privacy. The feel is very much smart and upbeat.

The Atmosphere
A lot of workers from nearby Soho frequent this Black and Blue and no matter what day of the week you visit you will always be involved in a lively and vibrant ambiance. The staff are friendly and aren’t too brusque that. You will easily see copious amounts of shoppers who have spent all their energies on an afternoon’s splurging in Selfridges.

The Food
There’s a good choice of salads, fish and meat dishes which is what Black and Blue are famous for. The sirloin steak is not cheap and weighs in at £13 for a smaller cut and £17 for a larger portion but the quality is there for all to be seen. Juicy, moist and tender and most importantly keeps its shape. There’s nothing worse than an unattractive, unshapely piece of meat slapped on the plate. The fries that accompany the steak are crisp and crunchy in texture but would have benefited from being a littler on the chunkier side.

The salmon Caesar salad is an interesting take on this classic of dishes but fails to live up to expectations as the salmon is not the freshest and gets lost within the sorry looking wilted lettuce leaves that make up the rest of the plate. A better alternative would be to opt for the steak baguette which is made with dry aged ribeye for a smokier and fuller flavour.

The Drink
A respectable wine list boasts a few interesting numbers including a couple of Pinot Noir’s and a cheeky Chateauneuf du Pape. Another choice would be to go for one of the roses featuring Sancerre and Cabernet.

The Last Word
Consistently good meat using the finest quality beef, Black and Blue provides a good choice of cuts that will have you grazing with pleasure.
