The ViewLondon Review
Another thoroughbred from the stable of steakhouse restaurants dotted around London, Black and Blue’s Haverstock Hill location delivers classic dishes and also does a mean steak to boot. The VenueBlack and Blue has an outside terrace which provides ample seating for al fresco dining, while inside benefits from the feel of a cross between an upmarket American-style diner and a brasserie, especially with its 1950s-esque pictures of iconic style products hanging proudly on the walls. Soft blue banquettes and a large bar which acts as the centrepiece round it all off.
The AtmosphereBlack and Blue is a type of night-time gathering for a large quantity of young followers that inhabit Belsize Park and Hampstead. A perfect spot for star gazing - of the twinkling kind, though, not celebrities.
The FoodBlack and Blue’s meat policy is entrusted in the finest English beef which is purchased from farmers in Yorkshire and Lancashire. Before it even appears in the kitchen it is first aged and tenderized for at least 28 days. It is a very simple menu that is in store when you venture inside.
For mains it would be a sin not to go for one of the juicy steaks on offer. Select from Cote de boeuf which is ideal for sharing, though at around £25.00 it’s a meaty price to pay. Other options are the sirloin, rib eye, fillet and T-bone. Char-grilled to perfection and pink and moist in the middle, this is definitely something to chew the fat over with someone over a nice glass of wine. Good side dishes include fries, which are crispy and packed full of potato.
Other alternatives would be the salmon steak served with a fresh horseradish sauce, and from the grill try the French trimmed lamb cutlets with grilled peppers which are succulent and tender. There are a couple of decent salads if meat does not float your boat. Choose a char-grilled goats’ cheese salad which at about £5.00 is good value for money. The chicken with crispy bacon is also a good dish full of crispy bacon bits and piled with generous lettuce leaves.
The DrinkBlack and Blue weigh in with an impressive wine list boasting around 20 reds and whites. Try an intensely bodied French Cabernet Merlot, a fruity Cotes du Rhone or, from the country famous for its own steaks, a crisp Argentinean Chardonnay.
The Last WordAnother option in the increasing steakhouse market, this Black and Blue branch delivers quality meat to diners who can sniff out a good sirloin or rib eye at 100 paces.
