3 of us went to Black and blue last night, we had steaks with salad and we shared a piece of new york cheesecake. At first we thought it was a nice and delicious meal, unfortunately we discovered we had food poisoning after we got home, we started vomiting and felt very bad with our stomachs. Our stomachs were in serious pain and couldn't sleep for the entire night.
We called up the restaurant but they said it wasn't their problem. They asked my boyfriend to see how it goes tomorrow before calling them up again. This is such an irresponsible attitude! I suspect that the salad was not clean enough or it has been put under room temperature for a long time.
I would not go back to this restaurant ever again as it has given me a very bad impression.
Terrible. Like starbucks with steak, but quite Gaucho Grill prices. Pretty poor service. Fillet steak ok, chips awful. Salad awful. No ambience or design. Places like this ruin Borough Market. Only went there as Brindisa was packed, now i know why. Never again.
Had wanted to try this restaurant for yonks! Went with a friend on 28th Mon eve, ok food and suitable pricing.
What really stood out was the c**p customer service. As soon as we arrived waitresses two waitresses walked by us before we had to ask a third for a table.
When taking our order no recommendations made or mention of specials or any attempt at engaging us in building a rapport.
A lady opposite us was ignored three times before she got up and went to seek assistance.
A table of six wanted to sit outside, there was a table for four but as the only other viable table had a member of staff on a fag break sitting at it they left to find a more welcoming venue.
These issues could be resolved with training, management with customer service at the forefront and staff who are keen to make sure their guests have a great visit. Unfortunately this establishment failed to match my high hopes, don't think I will be going back. :P
Went to Black and Blue a couple of Sundays ago with a couple of friends and, my, how this restaurant has gone down hill since I visited a few years ago for my brothers 40th birthday. As the sunday afternoon in question was warm and sunny we sat outside which was very pleasant. The service was polite and efficient. I chose the rib-eye which itself was cooked to perfection but what really let things down was the packet chips which were actually under-cooked and the sauce bearnaise which straight out of a jar. Not something one expects when you're paying £20! My friend's sirloin was thin and over-cooked. My other friend; a chef, had a rather unappetising salmon and scrambled egg affair with a small mountain of capers...this I was informed in no uncertain terms was not good!
As my chef friend and I concluded the only explanation for such a decline is down to the fact that as Borough Market is now such a tourist trap, they dont have to work hard to retain local diners as there is so much passing trade. I first noticed this effect when working as waiter in Sheep St, Stratford Upon Avon 20 years ago where American theatre goers would regularly get fleeced.
D- Must try harder!
hmmmm black and blue left me feeling a tad blue... I went on Friday night with three friends, two of which had fillet steak and I and another friend had ribeye. The fillet steak was, according to my friends, very nice, but the ribeye was very disappointing. I eat ribeye a lot because I like the strong taste, but this is the worst ribeye steak I have ever tasted, no flavour at all. The wine was nice, Pinot Noir at £22 a bottle but the service was impersonal with a stroppy approach. When we arrived at the bar we got ignored by the staff for about 15 minutes (they seemed to be having some sort of family gathering) but once I managed to get the attention of the staff they were efficient with the drinks.
I would not go back to black and blue, I left feeling rather sick and ripped off, it has the same feel as a pizza express but with the expensive of a Gaucho restaurant without the service.
Meat. Ahh meat... washed down with dark and stormy red. If meat is your beat then Black & Blue is for you.
Unpretentious and reasonably priced for what you get.
I totally disagree with the negative statements below, which have only compelled me further to write this review. The food is of a high standard and comes to your table hot and fast, just the way you would expect it.
Yes, it can be pricey, but for the excellent steaks on offer I would happily pay a little more. Although come to think of it, most good steaks are £15+ these days, no? Hardly over-priced, just market-matched I'd say - remember, this is a quality steakhouse, not an Angus Steakhouse.
The wine also seems to be excellently selected to complement the dishes on offer. I also enjoyed the unpretentious nature of a place which has things like prawn cocktail on the menu, which I hasten to add was utterly delicious and served on a fat, fresh and juicy lettuce leaf in its bowl.
Good atmosphere as well, the only thing that needs real attention is the music, which while unobtrusive and barely audible, was just a little hotel-lobbyish...
Two of us had a glass of Red at the bar before our meal, £5 each according to the wine list. They told us they'd bring them to us, so we sat at the bar. Bill arrived with the wine for £11.25. Not on, we thought, don't like that, but too late now.
Then another mate arrived, so I went back to the bar and ordered another glass, I stood at the bar with a £5 note. They poured the wine and said "£5.63 please". Obviously I gave them £5 and took the wine.
I found their approach quite disgusting really, and whilst the wine was good (we drank enough of it!), the meal was perfectly adequate (if not cheap!), this attitude left a bitter taste in my mouth. This restaurant was out to rip you off and you had to keep your wits about you - what did they charge us for the tap water? I didn't dare look.
There were 9 of us for the meal, we had a good time and they made alot of money out of us.
I will not be going back there!
A carnivore's heaven. Try the steaks!
