The ViewLondon Review
This Westbourne Grove restaurant is as much fun as its name.
The Venue
The restaurant draws as much attention to itself by its tongue-in-cheek name as by the sheer elegance of its facade, although it claims to be a Cantine Francaise and therefore without pretensions to elegance. The interior is tres chic and inspired, combining ultra modern lighting, slick glass and stylish black rock walls with massive wooden tables that give a touch of the canteen look. The sinks in the toilets are in the form of mini-waterfalls. Be sure to read the table mats, which are newspapers cuttings with amusing stories.
The Atmosphere
The place is a super success with tourists and locals alike, with many patrons returning consistently. The staff, like the owners, are young, dynamic and great fun and there is a perennial sense of festivity.
The Food
The menu is in the form of miniature blackboards that announce the day’s fare in white chalk lettering. The food is simple but authentic French cuisine and very good. Much attention is paid to the quality of products, with the owners getting all supplies directly from France. The goat’s cheese parcels are simply superb. The portions are massive and this is value for money, and only the desserts need a bit more work.
The Drink
The wine list isn’t longer than the blackboard menu, but the wines are good and the perfect complement to the meal.
The Last Word
Bloody good! Don’t miss out on the great food and quirky, elegant decor.
