General Price Guide: Inexpensive (N.B. No credit cards).
Location and Punters:
The Blue Legume, in Church Street, is at the heart of Stoke Newington’s "restaurant row". The whole area is alive with bars, chic cafés, music (regular jazz) and trendy restaurants, and The Blue Legume is a popular venue frequented by the young and cool - anyone, for that matter, who simply enjoys grazing à-la-brasserie style. It is also a firm favourite with local families. The nearest station is Stoke Newington.
Atmosphere and Décor:
The atmosphere at the Blue legume is lively and laid-back and the décor is casual and positively eccentric. This establishment manages to stand out from the mass of similar style Stoke Newington eateries and it buzzes with informality.
High chairs and reduced-price child portions make this a popular place to take the kids.
Nosh and Drinks:
The house specialities are, beyond doubt, the delicious cakes and pastries. The menu, however, is generally aimed at casual punters with flexible eating habits. There are some filling one-course meals on offer, with an emphasis on vegetarian dishes of substance, e.g. large portions of mushrooms with crème fraîche on ciabatta or pistachio and courgettes burgers with sour cream.
There are also decent meat dishes on the menu and if you’re really hungry, plump for a satisfying full breakfast – served up until 2pm. The Blue Legume is well known for its speciality coffees and juices. A decent range of other drinks is also available.
The Experience:
For a slice of the action and a slice of delicious patisserie, head straight for the Blue Legume. It is certainly an enjoyable experience. Although kids are welcome, the layout of the place is such that "kidophobe" punters would not feel uncomfortable.
