I have been to the Blue Mountain cafe on two occasions: once was for a private party and the atmosphere was lovely and the staff friendly but the food left a lot to be desired - very mediocre food and the rice and peas were not up to par nor was the snapper that I had.

Given that this was a 60th birthday party and a lot of the people there were older generation West Indian ladies who really can cook there were a lot of negative comments about the food but I decided to give it another go and went with friends (a couple of them had never sampled Caribbean cuisine).

I was humilated - the food was terrible although the staff were lovely, the service wasn't good - way too slow.

To give them the benefit of the doubt there was a large party of schoolteachers booked in and they were trying to sort them out.

The rice and peas was again soggy soggy and overcooked, my escoveitch fish bore as much resemblance to the escoveitch that I am used to in Jamaica as the Man in the Moon: it was a flat piece of filleted snapper, crispy on the skin side and seasoned with a bit of black pepper and salt!!!

No flavour whatsoever and this was most certainly NOT escoveitch. I felt terrible for my friends who had never had Carribean food as I persuaded them to have the fish saying how wonderful it was and then it turned up and I could have died.

The waitress got our orders muddled up and she knew it but did nothing to rectify this - we had to eat off each other's plates to sort it out.

We also had some terrible "rum" punch - this consisted of a load of strawberries in a glass with a bit of white rum poured in and topped with fizzy fruit juice or similar - it was certainly NOT rum punch and was grossly overpriced - as a dedicated Wray & Nephew white rum drinker I was appalled.

I will never go there again as the food was well below par, the prices well above and about the only saving gr

Wow you really know how to put your own community down, why not eat at your local caribbean takeaway, if you want to eat your mothers food stay at home. This cafe is obviously to forward thinking for some. One does not go out to eat thier mothers food but to experience others takes on the same dishes, I do appreciate you may have not enjoyed the food like mama makes but there is no need to rubbish other peoples successes. I have been to many function at the cafe, poetry nights, book readings, and live music nights and was delighted to be entertained and well fed. I am really proud that someone from our community has the foresight to have a go in an original and unique style. Keep uo the good work BM

Blue Mountain Cafe is everything that the previous reviewer has mentioned, but just wanted to mention the crowd that is usually there.

Blue mountain cafe is an ideal location for people with prams. It is paradise for the desperate housewives who just got their baby.

I feel a bit ambivalent about the cafe it is a nice place to go (nice food although slightly overpriced, nice staff etc), but there are just so many babies, mum meetings and couples (with babies) who looks like they are bored with each other and haven't been out for years.

What a gem the Blue Mountain Café is. Quirky and original, wonderfully friendly staff and a really relaxed atmosphere with great music. It is always bustling. The food was great and very reasonable. They often have a great selection on the specials board.

My favorite is the prawn and salmon dish or the chunky fish cake, and the best cake in the world is the lemon - oh how my hips could suffer. The Blue Mountain Café is a hub of the community, uniquely independent and a really valuable piece of the East Dulwich jigsaw.
