I looooooooooooved this place, aweseome food, awesome drinks, awesome music and in Shoreditch I mean, come on people learn your Mexican – have told all my friends about it, and some of them told me they had already been there and they had loved it too, it really bothers me when people write these nonsense reviews, I bet they were looking for Nachos with melted cheese like in the Mexican place I ate when i was living in Poland
Perhaps the best place to get 100% mexican meal in a real comfortable ambiance. Boho has many traditional dishes on the menu : the guacamole is original and tasty, the portions are large and the cocktails and beer selection is impressive. This is a very autentic restaurant that has friendly and smily staff.
30/7/11very disappointing! I decided to treat my Girlfriend to a Mexican meal. First thing we noticed is that they kept pressure on you to order drinks. We ordered a starter which was nothing special, but when we ordered the mains we were shocked at the very small portions, now i'm talking tiny! Not enough to feed a child of around 6 yrs old. Basically, what was on the plate consisted of about 2 egg-cups of rice, 10 strands of coleslaw and a chicken breast that needed a work-out with chest expander's at your local gym! But the worse bit was they were charging £10.95 each. My Girlfriend and I refused to pay good hard earned cash for such a poor excuse for a meal, when we complained the waitress said there was nothing she could do, then the manager explained that those were the portions, we again insisted that we were not happy, which he then said that we didn't have to pay. So the moral of the story is if you want a good Mexican 'try somewhere else!
What a disappointment. I was really excited to try this place as I live locally and love Mexican food. And I don't mean greasy, heavy Tex Mex. I mean proper Mexican food based on delicate flavouring and fresh ingredients. The reviews that say people who don't like this place don't know Mexican food are totally wrong. The food here is incredibly bland, which good Mexican food certainly is not. The best thing here was the guacamole, which was saved by the freshness of the ingredients alone. Unfortunately the chips tasted a day old and were under-salted, so kind of offset the goodness of the guacamole. The lamb in the flautas de barbacoa was tender, but really lacked flavour, as did everything in the chicken enchiladas. We had high hopes for the frijoles charros, a bean stew cooked with herbs, chorizo and bacon; but this was the biggest disappointment of all. It actually tasted of nothing. Even when I tasted a bit of the chorizo on its own, it tasted like nothing. It's the first time I've sampled truly tasteless meat. In addition to the food massively lacking flavour, there are no condiments on the table - and I don't just mean tabascos (although they should have these as well). I mean not even salt and pepper, which you shouldn't have to ask for. I'm really hoping that the owners will read these reviews, as I desperately want to love this place. I go out to eat regularly and don't mind small portions and the prices here, but the food has to be worth it and in this case it just isn't.
I went on a Sunday evening and the atmosphere was relaxed but vibrant, we were treated very well by the friendly staff.
The food however, didn't rock my boat at all...
The portions were tiny, even though I'd been warned of this by the waitress, and had ordered three dishes as suggested, I left still feeling hungry after spending over £20.
The 'Guacamole Tia Patty' ... nachos with dip... although nice, was a ridiculously small portion for £4.95. The Empanadas de Flor de Calabaza tasted almost exactly like the frozen crispy cheese pancakes you can buy from Iceland. I didn't dig that. The Tacos are hilariously small - two or three inches across. This might be traditional or something, but it was still alarming when I actually received them.
The Mexican beer I had was very lovely, and was the highlight of the meal.
The light in the toilets was ugly.
I am a regular for dinner ,birthday ,parties I just love the place the family ambiance they create it's easy to ask joke with the staff ,the food is really really good and I recommend the Pipian Verde is definitely a taste of even and the Margaritas hmmm! Just go and enjoy the food the drink and the party ambiance made in Boho Mexica!
Two weeks ago i went to Boho Mexica for dinner and i had my first experience with REAL Mexican food! The food is really tasty, the cocktails are delicious and the staff is reaaaaaaaaaaaaly friendly. As a cosy, cool and good restaurant, i definitely recommend it!
Just about the worst dining experience in my life. Nothing better than a gastronomic clip-joint. The food was tough, tasteless, the staff were lazy and forgetful. They brought my side dish for my mains as a starter and when I said it was to accompany the mains as ordered, the waitress said that lots of people like it as a starter and just left it on the table to get cold. The main courses arrived. Tiny portions, inedible bits of beef, burnt (yes, burnt, NOT caramelised, plantain) and two thin enchilades with a tasteless, thick salsa verde poured over. We said we couldn't eat this and wanted to send it back. They told us that there was nothing wrong with the food. We could order something else, but we'd have to pay for all the food served. We refused to pay for the mains, left cash on the table for drinks and the shared starter (which wasn't very good either) and tried to leave. Then the fun started. The staff tried to physically prevent us from leaving. They threatened to call the police, which I said was fine with me. Of course they didn't. The barman and even the cook (some english guy) came out to stop us leaving unless we paid.
They said that being English we know nothing about Mexican food. Which was funny, as my fellow diner is a professional foodie and knows more about food than this lot will ever know.
In the end we did leave, with the cook and another guy (the barman?) shouting insults at us and telling us to never to come back. At least we agreed on something.
I love Boho Mexica - have visited several time both for drinks parties and meals out with friends and it's a great venue. A perfect atmosphere for a catch up or a celebration. The food is superb, with small tapas style plates meaning that you can mix and match and sample a really good selection from the menu. The cocktails are equally delicious. I would highly recommend a visit if you're not already a regular.
I couldn't disagree more with those negative reviews posted. I have searched for good Mexican in London forever and finally found it at Boho. Our meal there was delicious, the service was friendly and prompt and the atmosphere was terrific. We even had a great chat with Enrique the owner who couldn't have been more gracious and charming. We have guests coming in from Australia next week and this is the first restaurant we're talking them too. Cheers!
I should say that just looking at some of the reviews below i genuinely think some people may have confused this restaurant with another place!
I went to Boho Mexica last weekend for a friend's birthday and had a fantastic time, would definitely recommend to anyone, even/especially if you don't know mexican food, this place was a real experience for me. Cuisine was exceptional, the atmosphere and ambiance were perfect, subtle and homely whilst still being dapper and intriguing.
Really friendly staff, very knowledgeable and happy to chat. Also delicious mexican beers and mixed drinks. i had a great time and am already planning another visit soon.
Not sure what the most recent comments were referencing. My dinner at Boho was extremely tasty and also I thought the wait staff clearly knew their stuff about the menu and also were very lovely to deal with. The atmosphere is extremely cool and I look forward to returning there very shortly.
A big group of us went to this place at the weekend to celebrate our birthdays - it was one of the best nights i've had in town and proper Mexican food, a million times better than Chiquitas or Nando's, this is the real deal. The staff were very attentive and the food is out of this world, I recommend the guacamole - you won't get better anywhere else - and he seabass is to die for. Looking forward to going there again with the missus. Great food, cold beer, cool music and reasonably priced too. :)
Booo Hooo Mexica - Awful food, awful service ! Didnt help that the two poor chaps sitting next to our table were asked to leave for apparently touching up one of the waitresses. It also didnt help that being there were five of us as witnesses, didnt see any such thing and declared their innocence. The whole thing made us feel uncomfortable and totally put us off our meal...what with the chocolate chicken dish - disgusting. Please avoid...go to the Hawksmoor down the road !!
I couldn't agree more with the first comment.
Think of anything that could go wrong during a night out and it will happen in this place. The drinks were late, the dishes did not contain the ingredients advertised on the menu and were overpriced. Basic garnishes for Mexican food such as salsas, chopped onion and coriander were unavailable, leaving the dishes dry and meager.
Finally, they tried to charge us for food that never got to the table (since it took them more than 40 min to serve it and I couldn't wait to get out of there).
The staff were very rude and clueless and on top of everything they tried to argue with me about what real Mexican food is like. I am Mexican myself, a hardcore foodie and have tried every Mexican restaurant in London. And I can assure you that this place brings the idea of a bad restaurant to a whole new level.
It's a perfect example on how a good concept can be completely ruined by a lack of basic service mentality and any care for cooking.

boho mexica is possibly the worst restaurant I have ever been to in London. It is all about image but beneath that there is nothing on offer worth considering. The service was terrible, the waiters rude and slow, and the food was disgusting - really vile, The music was blaring and pointlessly loud. I daresay it is a ploy to keep everyone distracted from the muck they serve up. I immodestly can say that I happen to know a lot about food - When I complained - and returned my dried pieces of cat food like pork chunks on uncooked tortillas, I was asked by the impertinent teenage waitress if I knew anything about Mexican food! As if my presumed ignorance had been my problem. boho mexica was hideous. Rude staff and inedible food. Really all of it was bad - and the Guacamole tasted like detergent. Keep well away - they need to close -and go home and read more about cooking Mexican food and think long and hard. A vile pretentious dump.
I think this place is really nice. The service has been great and the place looks amazing.
Especially the mural in the back. It's the best Mexican food I've tasted in London.
Can't understand these other reviews. The food and service have been fantastic both times I have gone.
The portions are tapas style -- and priced accordingly -- so don't expect a heaving plate of rice, beans, and cheese.
This is real Mexican food -- not Tex-Mex. Some of the flavours are rich and hearty while others are deceptively delicate.
The menu has a wide range of choices. I lived in Mexico for a few months and this is the closest I've seen to real Mexican food in many years of trying to find it.
Go and try it for yourself.
The manager was appalling and downright rude.
After I had been seated and had ordered food from the waiter, the manager came and spoke to me extremely rudely, throwing in a withering look of distaste at me for good measure and requested that I vacate the table and move to the bar.
I was dining alone, the place was otherwise empty- just awful. I left without eating from the menu which in all fairness is truthfully limited.
Basically I had entered the place in a jovial mood, and left with my mood turned by uncalled for nasty treatment.
I'll stick with my favourite Mexicalin restraunt Mestizo even though it means a trek to new hampstead road whilst I live very close to Boho mexica, because it is brilliant all round and I can always expect great service, great food and the best margaritas in London.
I had high hopes but sadly this restaurant is over-priced and serves minuscule portions.
Service is also slow and disorganised. A shame really as the food is actually good.
