30/1/12 we went on our normal trip to Covent Garden and the opera to find my favourite cafe closed. I have been going there so many years. the service has been good and quick - especially if rushing to go to the theatre. always good value for money. where shall I go now on my frequent trips? no where will be the same. does anyone know what happened to it???

We were very disappointed to discover (22 Jan 2012) that Boswells is closed. On previous visits to Covent Garden we had always found the food, staff and ambience to be excellent.
We hope that such an historic venue can be revived.

Was very disappointed with this restaurant, the food was not a good standard and expensive for what it was. We chose it because it was convenient for us going to see Shrek, as part of our trip to London for my daughter's 21st birthday. The staff didn't bother to ask if we were happy with our meals, which were not hot and just bland. This food is what you would expect in a cafe at a fraction of the price. Wrote to the restaurant to express my concerns but funnily enough I've not had a reply!

Boswells is an excellent place to visit if you want to grab something nice before the theatre. We visited Saturday and the offerings were perfect for something light.


The actual venue is gorgeous - you can tell it is steeped in history and makes you feel somehow connnected with Mr. Boswell and Dr. Johnson themselves! Boswells really is a treat.

I really didn't like this place. We went here for a quick bite before going to woman in black and didn't have high hopes but this was even worse! The bread was old, the steak was 80% fat, the pasta didn't taste like anything and they even managed to serve really dirty french fries!! If you would like to have a nice dinner... THIS IS NOT THE PLACE!
The only good thing about it was that the waitress was kind enough not to ask how the food was.. Very wise!
