The ViewLondon Review

For a taste of the east in the heart of the north head to Bouga. Be warned, with quirky cocktails and authentic Moroccan cuisine there is definitely something moreish about this place.

The Venue
Whilst Crouch End may seem an unlikely location for an exotic cocktail bar and restaurant, the lack of a nearby tube certainly adds to the illusion of a journey to a land far, far away. However, when you walk through the low entrance it is truly possible to believe you have left North London behind (unless of course you are seated by the window).

Inside is a small space painted a deep shade of red. The low ceilings and walls are adorned with a collection of artifacts that, combined with the candlelit lanterns, create an effect that verges on trippy and is probably best appreciated with a sheesha pipe in hand. Low velvet cushioned seats line the walls in the back of the restaurant and the tiny tables are packed in tight.

The Atmosphere
Bouga is often busy from the outset with a crowd that can only be described as eclectic. It’s impossible not to wonder what has brought these people together or to get a sense for the target market they are aiming for. Unfortunately, they can be unprepared for the volume and service can be slow.

The Drink
Bouga boasts an award winning mixologist and this shows in the cocktail list, which is short but refreshingly different. The Zaher el fil delightfully combines an unusual list of ingredients, including raspberry liqeur, pomegranate juice, basil and black pepper that is frighteningly easy to drink but with a hidden sting in the tail. Equally intriguing is the Zyriab Julep, which features the classic Moroccan flavours of date and mint. Almost as unusual as the cocktails themselves is the price – you can walk away with change from a fiver.

The Food
Bouga has a Moroccan menu, with it’s own version of tapas, including both hot and cold dishes. There are good vegetarian options, such as Mechouia, which is a pastry filled with chargrilled peppers, tomato and paprika. They also offer a full a la carte menu with plenty for the meat eater in the form of traditional Moroccan kebabs and some unusual fish dishes. Food prices are also easy on the wallet.

The Last Word
Is coming here really worth the effort for those of us outside of North London? The jury is still out. Bouga has many of the right ingredients; personality, individuality and value for money with a big question mark over service. Certainly one to watch.
