The ViewLondon Review
Boulevard Bar and Dining Room offers a slice of sophistication on one of London’s most diverse streets, with great food and cocktails, and a friendly, intimate feel. The VenueLocated at the Wardour Street end of Old Compton Street, Boulevard Bar and Dining Room is close to Piccadilly Circus tube, and is a great venue to watch all of the oddities and goings on in Soho from the glass-fronted bar.
Inside, you’ll notice a Seventies feel with floral wallpaper, low square stools, chandeliers, and table lamps, and it’s divided into intimate spaces by pillars and tables. Split in two, the front of the venue is the bar, whilst the rear is the dining area with a more formal booth layout for those who have come to enjoy a meal. During the summer, there are a few continental-style pavement tables from which to enjoy the warmer evenings.
The AtmosphereBoulevard Bar and Dining Room attracts a classy crowd of theatre-goers, trendy hipsters and the well dressed mature reveller, which creates a buzzy vibe of metropolitan glamour and sophistication. In general, the bar staff are friendly and knowledgeable about the food and drink they serve, but service can be slow when this venue gets busy and it can be a fight to get to the bar on Friday nights.
The FoodUnique to Old Compton Street, Boulevard Bar and Dining serves up an extraordinary Modern European menu with rare breed meats and a large, well-executed vegetarian selection. Enjoy a range of bread and olive oil while you take your time over the menu, which gives the provenance of all the meat it sells. Prices are quite high, with starters at £5-£10 and main courses £10-£18. There’s a weekend brunch menu on offer also.
The DrinkBoulevard Bar and Dining Room is unique on a street awash with alcopops and cappuccinos, with a focus on cocktails and fine wines. Using a quality range of spirits to create them, prices are kept reasonable for the cocktails, although the wine list is woefully inadequate for the food menu on offer and overpriced. The bar staff know their drinks but you’ll often find yourself waiting at the bar for far too long when it’s busy.
The Last WordDespite the slow service, Boulevard Bar and Dining Room is the most sophisticated venue Old Compton Street has to offer with quality cocktails, an outstanding food selection, an intimate setting, and the most elegant partygoers in Soho.
