The ViewLondon Review
Set in the heart of Theatreland, this French-style brasserie provides a tempting menu of tasty treats in Covent Garden.
The Venue
Comfortable with warm decor and hospitality, Boulevard Brasserie is the perfect place to enjoy a meal. The restaurant boasts a nice relaxing environment with wooden tables topped with flowers and candles, flattering lighting and mirrors which create a sense of space. The location is key to providing the restaurant with a nice mixture of clientele – right in the heart of Covent Garden.
The Atmosphere
Boulevard Brasserie has a nice, informal atmosphere lending itself to the friendly waiting staff, cosy interior and chilled music. The venue has a definitive French brasserie feel although the menu doesn't stay true to form with a few Italian, English and Greek dishes thrown in for good measure – something that may upset hardcore Francophiles.
The Food
This restaurant offers good value for money – not only are the dishes reasonably-priced but the portion sizes are generous too. Starters start from £1.95, mains from £7.95 and desserts are all priced at £4.95. For starters the moules marinieres makes an excellent choice – prepared the authentic way, the fresh mussels are cooked in cream, garlic, white onion and white wine sauce. The sauce is creamy yet light and bursting with flavour and the mussels taste of the sea – delicious. This dish comes with a baguette to soak up the creamy sauce. The Mediterranean fish soup also bursts with flavour and provides a rich texture and well-seasoned seafood taste. Usually fish soup would be complemented with a gruyere topped crouton, but unfortunately in this case three unhappy looking croutons are served on a side plate with julienne-style strips of cheese.
Steak frites is a good main choice, especially for those with a large appetite. If you ask for rare steak, you get rare steak – good to see that a restaurant gets this spot on. The steak is both tender and succulent and tastes like a decent cut of meat. The garlic butter makes a good simple sauce but is a little heavy on the salt. The chips are crunchy and tasty. The sea bass fillet with sautéed spinach is a delicious hearty option for fish lovers who like their fish flavoursome and fresh. The grilled fillet is complemented with a prawn and wholegrain mustard sauce that is both punchy and creamy. The separate side of petit pois probably provide one's recommended weekly intake of salt but are very tasty all the same. They're cooked in stock and dotted with little pickled onions, which add a good depth of flavour and an unusual element to an otherwise straightforward dish.
The crème brulee boasts a strong vanilla flavour and the texture of the custard is that of silk. The crunchy topping is also cooked to perfection. The petit pot au chocolat does what it says on the tin, providing a little pot of creamy bittersweet chocolate mousse.
The Drink
There is a good selection of wine and Champagne. The house rosé, Bergerie de la Bastide Rosé (£4.95 a glass and £16.95 a bottle) is crisp and fruity and makes for a nice, light, summer choice. There is also bottled beer, cider and spirits available.
The Last Word
Great atmosphere, flavoursome food and friendly waiting staff – an all-round pleasant experience.
