After reading the reviews already posted I felt I should add my own... Breads Etc is a really lovely little place, and it's a shame that some people have had bad experiences with the service there.

The thing is, it is really tiny, and it gets very busy on the weekends. You can actually book tables before 11, and if you haven't booked I would definitely suggest getting there before 10.30 as otherwise you'll be queuing on the pavement in the cold.

It can be a bit cramped in there but for me that adds to the atmosphere a bit. The range of breakfasts and the relaxed attitude of the DIY toast is great. The food has always been delicious when I've been there, especially the sourdough and walnut breads.

After the wait, not long but seemed longer with the artic wind, the café was warm and inviting and we did not want to leave. Staff were great, but the food was something worth writing about (that’s why I am). Yes it’s a bread lovers dream – and you can start as soon as you are in so there is no delay – however the food was quick, hot and tasty. I came with a large group and all were feed in no time and at the same time. Wholesome and down to earth just like the breads and just like the café. Job well done.xx

After a 20 minute wait in the cold for a table, four of us enjoyed a reasonable breakfast, albeit with a "chewy" smoothy and a lack of condiments for the DIY toast. We were then given the bill as the last plate was cleared and told that there were lots of people waiting for a table, i.e hurry up! We said to each other that I guess we wouldn't want to be the ones waiting outside, but this isn't quite what you expect from the staff when you're paying a £60 bill for brekkie!

Unfortunately I then noticed a large cockroach under the table as I bent down to pick up my bag, so I quietly notified one of the waitresses who took a large step back and went to get the manager. The manager then grabbed some napkins and picked up the bug gingerly. A few seconds later he threw it back on the table in front of us and laughed, shouting "actually it's only plastic you tw*ts!" He then tried to make out that it had probably come from a Xmas cracker (none in sight given that it is November, and strange old Xmas crackers if that's what's in them..). When I asked him to explain why he felt the need to call us "tw*ts" when clearly he and the waitress had also thought it was real, he told me I was overreacting and that the conversation was now ending. Clearly this whole thing evoked a very weird reaction in him, one that suggested perhaps it wasn't the first time? Or perhaps it could be put down to relief in that it wasn't real..? Who knows.. Anyway, this was altogether one of the strangest experiences I have ever had, needless to say we will be brunching at Fantasia down the road now, which is much better anyway.

So if you want to queue in the cold for ages to get an average breakfast in a cramped restaurant, where you have to make half of it yourself anyway, and then get abused by the manager, this is a great place to go.

My fiancee raved about this place for ages, so I decided we should pay it a visit (when she was 4 and a half months pregnant).

After waiting for 10 minutes outside we were ushered into a ridiculously claustrophobic and cramped 'cafe’ - pretty much elbow to elbow with other patrons, my fiancee then ordered a latte coffee which was served in a tumbler?!

this was too hot to pick up as of course it had no handle (I know they’re pretentious, but how they think they can serve a latte in a tumbler I don’t know! You would be slapped for such a thing in Italy).

After the breakfast, which was decidedly average (no mushroom, beans or black pudding) the waiter struggled with the elementary task of picking a plate up - knocking cutlery over my pregnant fiancee and then in the resulting commotion she had her coffee spilt over her lap and belly (fortunately for them it was cold by that stage).

The waiter then had the audacity to say 'don’t worry we won’t charge you for service’ at which point I should have slapped him with a loaf of their 'award winning bread’ - which by the way is exactly the same as bread available everywhere in Italy, I guess sourdough bread just isn’t as common here.

Personally I would avoid this place, I don’t see why anyone would queue to get into here, I have had breakfast at FAR better places and if I want sourdough bread OR coffee (served in a cup with a handle) I would go to an Italian bakery or cafe, thanks (or would even prefer to have a classic English breakfast at a greasy spoon than here).
