The ViewLondon Review
Bumpkin’s unusual concept has generated much hype, and the result is a bit posher than you’d expect. The VenueBumpkin is located at the less fashionable end of Ledbury Road, which, perhaps, adds to the rustic appeal. The restaurant is divided into three floors. The ground floor, with its wooden bar and furniture and busy wallpaper, resembles a country tavern. The theme is continued into the toilets as well. The second floor is the fine dining area, which resembles a dining room in an old country house. On the top floor is a lounge area with quaint wooden tables and chairs perfect for relaxing with after dinner drinks.
The AtmosphereThe ground floor gets rambunctious when it’s crowded, and the no reservations policy means that people wait around until they can be seated, which adds to the congested feel of the place. The decor is rustic, but with the prices, the clients are anything but bumpkins. The service is very good and prompt, despite the crowds.
The FoodThe bread is lovely and the starters are vaguely innovative and mercifully not greasy. Mains include fish like mackerel and salmon with simple accompaniments meat options include an Aberdeen Angus beef burger and lamb chops with mint sauce. The lack of vegetarian options comes as a surprise in a neighbourhood like Notting Hill . Desserts are very good, but pass on the watery coffee.
The DrinkThe wine list is vast and extremely sophisticated so don’t be fooled by the name of the restaurant. You definitely won’t be having ale with your supper.
The Last WordIf you haven’t reserved on a Saturday night and need supper, try Bumpkin. You’re sure to find a table here and may be pleasantly surprised by the grub.
