If you think that only guests dine at smart Mayfair hotels, then think again, for the Chesterfield Hotel’s restaurant is one of the most welcoming spots in town.

The Venue
The Chesterfield Hotel is a four-star luxury hotel in Mayfair, close by Berkeley Square, but you don’t have to stay in the hotel to eat at Butlers Restaurant. The decor is surprisingly casual, with deep red seating, wooden walls, high arches and plenty of cheery plants.

The Atmosphere
An inviting warmth seems to pervade Butlers Restaurant, which has an ambience that speaks volumes and one that is British through and through. The staff will always encourage you to relax and enjoy this haven of rest in the middle of Mayfair.

The Food
On the menu are seasonal and classic dishes including a different roast every day. Starters offer dishes with a twist such as Bouillabaisse, Tempura tiger prawns with mango and coriander compote and sweet chilli sauce, rabbit and foie gras terrine with grape and apple chutney, and ahoulder of lamb in Indian spices. Caesar salad makes a good and tasty starter, although you can order it as main course too.

Alleged to serve the best Dover sole in London, Butler’s also excels in another old reliable such as plain cod and chips. This comes in quite the biggest portion you could imagine, a luscious piece of the fish in crispy batter, nestling on a tower of big, handcut chips, with a serving of traditional mushy peas. For the meat fans, the carving trolley has its daily changing roast including leg of lamb, loin of pork, honey roast ham and rib of beef.

Save some room for a dessert of Eton Mess, which is literally a scrumptious heap of broken meringue, soft fruit and whipped cream. Also on the menu are sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, a trio of creme brulees, orange, coffee and raspberry, or the honeycomb ice cream. And if you can’t decide which to choose, then the assiette of desserts has a little of several. The chocolate selection also offers three treats, chocolate fondant, white and amaretto cheesecake and mint chocolate mousse.

The Drink
The hotel’s Wine Room has an enviable selection of vintage wines, many of which are available in half bottles or by the glass. Regular tastings are presented and Butler’s serves Bouchard Finlayson’s wines of South Africa which are particularly recommended.

The Last Word
Butlers Restaurant offers good food and wine at a very reasonable price for Mayfair. This is luxury living at modest prices.
