Dinner for 2 at Cafe de Thai
Very good friendly service and they remembered my request
for a quiet corner table. Loved the choice of different dining areas.
My soft shell crab starter was yummy
Thai jungle chicken curry - bit disappointing quite not very spicy
and no fresh herbs in sight.
However my man had Thai green chicken curry and loved it
I would say it's a great place to go
if you're in a big group as reasonably priced and pretty good
just maybe not as spicy tasting as I hoped.
We knew your place from the Tastecard.
It's very good offer for the good food.
Prawn tempura, satay chicken and squid starters were amazing.
Stir fry flat noodles with prawns and green curry so delicious!
Only let down was plain rice served with the mains:
looked like it was in the serving bowls for hours before being served, didnt looked or tasted fresh at all.
Overall great experience,
great service,
great food,
we will definitely go back
Cafe de Thai in Notting hill lived up to expectations.
A great variety of food - we decided to go for the set menu
to sample a few dishes. The portions were generous
and they catered to a couple of specific ingredients
we wanted omitting.
Although you couldn't describe it as intimate the atmosphere
was good for a Wednesday night; the crowd quite mixed.
Would definitely go again.
DOES NOT EVEN DESERVE ONE STAR!!!I have just returned from this place and I have been to many restaurants on tastecard but this is the first review i have written because this place is ABYSMAL. It is the worst restaurant i have been and especially the worst thai restaurant. It was that disgraceful that we could not wait to leave. Firstly i would not even recommend this place to my arch nemesis. I shall start with the drinks i ordered a lemonade and coke for my friend and they were both flat it was obvious they were from an old bottle and for £2 overpriced. Secondly i asked for tap water with ice and they did not have ice and brought very warm water. The starters were nothing special spring rolls and satay and if not on tastecard overpriced especially for the spring rolls they are small and you get three of them. We ordered one green curry and one yellow curry both chicken and i do not believe that the meat was chicken as i could not even eat the meat. The curries are small as well as their rice portions which is what we ended up eating with the curry sauce. We were very unsatisfied. The bill was £17 excluding £3 service which we did not pay for. The place does not accept card unless £20 which was absolute rubbish because when we told the waiter we only had £16.50 in cash which was 50p less than the bill and honestly does not deserve a penny especially when it was a atrocious place to eat at. I have been to many restaurants and if i have been unhappy they have kindly removed the item which i was unhappy with. However the waiter started yelling at us which is very unprofessional. The waiter decided that he would take our £17 card payment after all his nonsense saying has to be £20 and over. If your a fan of thai food then STAY AWAY as far as possible!!!!!
The first time i went to this restaurant was Saturday evening.
The food was excellent and couldn't be faulted, especially
the Green chicken curry
which I recommend to any non vegetarian.
The price of drinks was about London standard so no complaints there.
This is an an ideal restaurant for a date, particularly a first date occurring on the evening. My own date, called Giovanni,
noticed that there were a lot of people in this restaurant
that looked potentially like they were on dates.
She noticed this on her way back from powdering her nose.
All in all a good evening
We went there with a KGB deal. We paid £8.50 each for what was supposed to be £30+ each's worth.
The only menu we were allowed was scribbled on a piece of paper and the drinks list cello taped up so that we couldn't see half of it. The food left a LOT to be desired and in all fairness was just about worth what we paid - the "service" was a Thai chap in a pair of very low hung jeans - so low I feared he would reveal all before the meal was gone. NOT a pleasant sight when you are eating.
The place needed a good clean and the back room was piled up with junk.
I think I am being very kind giving ONE star!
Go at your peril
went here on a Friday night and was seated straight away which i was surprised about as it was busy.
the waiter was attentive except for when we had finished and wanted to pay, we had to wait quite a while to get the bill.
the food is amazing. we had vegetarian spring rolls to start which we piping hot, served with a tasty dip and very very scrumptious. Then I had the Pad Thai (prawn noodles) which was truly the most delicious noodle dish I have ever eaten.
The food was fairly reasonable priced for central London. I see there are quite a few bad reviews about this restaurant but I had a really good experience here and will definitely be going back. YUM!
My girlfriend and I are not people who complain a lot but after our dinner there last night I have to express my opinion. We got the deal through KGB deals and it was the worst dinner I have every had, the food was tastless and the service wasn`t the greatest considering it was not that fill. My reason for writing this was that throughout the night, we were both clinging onto the toliet saying goodbye to the terrible food. Don`t be fooled by my review go try it for yourself and see what you think!!
I found chunks of chicken in my vegetarian curry. Guess they could not be bothered to make a veggie one so they just took out the larger chunks of meat. They missed a few though. Completely unacceptable!
I found this restaurant for two courses for £9 I've usually been to thai restaurant elsewhere nearby, but Cafe de THai change my mind. I love their currys, creamy of pure coconut and fresh thai herb. Pricewise is perfect even the lovely service. *****
We were very impressed with this restaurant! The service was excellent from the moment we entered the restaurant and our waiter was very attentive. The setting is lovely, modern and intimate.
We had the set menu and it was very nice! The food looked good, was well presented and tasted good.
It is easy to get to from the tube station and if we are ever in this part of London again then we will pay them another visit!
Thank you very much to the staff for making our evening so enjoyable.
Avoid this place!
I went with my wife for dinner and left the restaurant with disappointment and regret.
- The service was awful.
- The table was dirty and the waiter did not even bother to clean it until we asked for it.
- The glasses in which our drinks were served were dirty.
- The rice was old and re-heated.
- The curry was too watery and tasteless.
Will never go back and advice to think twice before you go to this place.
My wife and I went there once and ordered the Grand Palace Banquet, which says is for a minimum of 2 people.
Well, it was very delicious, and way too much. We ate what we could and brought the rest home. We still had a meal for two more days with the leftovers. And after considering the taste discount, the price for that quantity is hard to beat.
My friend and I were the only diners there the other evening - that should have warned us! It appeared that the kitchen could not be bothered to cook any of their dishes properly: the tempura and mixed starter contained deep friend items that were extremely greasy (probably as a result of not getting the oil up to the right temperature before cooking in it), the soup was laden with chilli but served only lukewarm, the curry was extremely watery and lacked the richness and flavour I have come to expect and enjoy in other Thai restaurants, and the fragrant Jasmine rice was not fragrant and was dry and overcooked. To finish I had a banana spring roll and ice cream, a dish that sounded different in theory but was very disappointing in practice. One of the spring rolls had disintegrated completely and was just a mush of blackened banana and burnt oily spring roll pastry, and the other roll was not much better although it held its shape - the ice cream was OK!
To whom it may concern,
Recently, I visit this Thai restaurant in Notting hill area with my colleagues. I've been there quite a few times,
because I do like the taste of the food, comfortable place and affordable prices with the discount opportunity
on the tastecard.
Usually, I eat-out quite often, but I've never seen the inappropriate behavior of the other diner. Last week, I
visited Cafe Thai restaurant again. I and my colleagues were enjoyable for my partner's birthday.
We found the other table asked for more chillies, salt and hot sauce. Actually, they'd been served as requested,
also comment as non-taste, which I respect all people have the different taste.
At the end, while we're having the desserts that table ask for the coffee and the bill. Then they refused to pay
the entire bill, because the coffee isn't in the part of the discount. It'd been overcharge and won't pay the service charge.
I found the frustrate waiter, explain the discount offer only available for food and 3 waiters give all the service on every tables
(5 tables) in the small restaurant.
Anyway, they left without the coffee bill and service charge. They will raise the complain to the local community, website
and tell every table that night and my party. Unfortunately for that waiter, actually he gave them more service than us,
but we're enjoyable with the food and the simple service from 3 waiters. We gave them the service charge and also
extra aswell, there's nothing wrong.
Finally, I'm looking forward to see the consideration of the condition and information for all the tastecard holder.
I understand that waiter, he should explain to his boss.
This is my fathers favourite restaurant and I can now see why.
As you walk in to a rather unassuming restaurant you are greeted by waiters with smiles all round.
The food is amazing ***
I would suggest always trying the specials on the menu.
Barbeque duck or Drunken duck salad is fresh and delicious!
There is green garden view where you can sit and enjoy a brandy or a jasmine tea after dinner to let all the delicious food digest.
The atmosphere can be buzzing on certain week nights but other nights it can be very romantic.
The service charge only 10% of the food and drink,
but I gave them more as they serve us a great meal ***
I must try for all Londoners!
The service and food was awful! I don't normally complain about the service and food in restaurants. But there was only one person serving us and others as the girl that greeted us initially didn't know how to communicate with us.
I had to wait at least 15 minutes for my pineapple and coconut drink which tasted so watered down, when my boyfriend got his glass of wine within 5 minutes. Our menu was handwritten as we came on a voucher deal, although we ended up spending more than what we paid for the voucher on drinks - 2 glasses of wine and glass of juice + service charge. They add service charge on everything.
I came there optimistically despite seeing all the negative reviews just before going.
Was told when booking over the phone that they only take cash, but when we got there, they had a card machine and we paid with the card for the extras.
Stay AWAY! Terrible standards both in terms of service and quality of food. Not to mention it's an upselling rip off. Don't be fooled by the decor, it really isn't that great either. So where to begin then..?
Well, let's start at the beginning with the drinks. I ordered a Thai beer from and carefully pointed to the brand from the menu. The beer arrived in a glass (no bottle) and was marked on the bill as an entirely different brand, of course costing extra. The waiter's excuse? It was a premium lager that he thought I had requested... Arriving in a glass alone, made it tricky to determine which brand it was anyway except that it tasted flat.
Moving on to the food. My partner selected the green thai curry. I opted for the drunken duck (breast of duck + whiskey sauce). The waiter repeatedly asked me if I was certain I did not want to try the 'chef's duck' off the specials. After explaining that the whiskey/duck combination was particularly interesting, he then informed me in a last ditched effort to upsell that the dish no longer contained whiskey out of respect for the religious preferences of others! Fed up with his insistence, I folded and ordered the expensive chefs duck so highly recommended. All in all a rather painful experience.
Now for the dishes themselves. My partner's green curry lacked any character or depth of flavour and was extremely runny in consistency. The 'chefs duck' was anything but special. An ugly mess of a dish, it contained little more than a couple of grey slices of breast and an even smaller offering of vegetables dumped on top. The sauce resembled an extra watery Bisto gravy. Generally insipid, the meal was miles away from the fresh ingredients and stunning flavours associated with Thai cuisine.
We paid and left without ever having been asked whether we enjoyed are meal or even receiving a 'thank you, goodnight'. To make matters worse, the place was near enough empty. A total and utter disappointment.
Purple walls, gilt mirrors & candlelit dark wood tables lend this affable Thai between Westbourne Park & Ladbroke Grove stations a faintly romantic air – no wonder it’s been adopted by wised-up locals who know a good green chicken curry when we taste one. Good hospitalty and chram services.
I myself, would like to express that i loved Susan comment, seem she is a bit greedy and angry to the small Thai restaurant. Tonight even there was quite quiet end by all saints road, I have been there twice, which was utterly different from her negative comments, The starter was great, the squid, my main was reccommeded by the waiter, BBQ duck was magnificent of the whole meal. The rice is exactly 2pounds but size is fair enough. So please support the new comer Thai restaurant for our warm community rather than.
Never again! Poor quality of food and diabolical service. Have ordered two takeaways and the guy taking the phone order up sells to point of being rude. The first occasion he was insistent (no less than 7 times) on adding rice when i only wanted noodles. The second time i ordered noodles and rice with 3 other dishes and he offered a further 9 dishes including more rice. I am ordering for two including a petite vegetarian (don't bother with the papaya salad). On both occasions i was overcharged, the bill is conveniently in thai, not itemised and the delivery man can't/won't speak English. As for the food - rubbish!
Cafe de thai was overall a lovely evening. The interior's lovely, woody + candle lit with welcoming staff. The mains were excellent, the starters were fabulous. My soft shell crab was beyond the standard of nearby places and spring rolls average. But main 'specials' of bbq duck and lamb were tasty, imaginative, well presented - v good. Must go!
I was very dissapointed in this establishment. I booked a table for 2 people for a friday evening based on the good reviews. When we got there, the place was empty and dark, no atmosphere what so ever. The menu looked interesting and as I tried to order the drunken duck the waiter said I should order the bbq duck instead, I asked him why because the drunken duck sounded more exciting and whether he liked it, he made a face to show his negative feelings towards it so I order the bbq duck instead. When our starters of dumplings and chicken satay arrived I was shocked at the miniscule portions. At £4.50 for a full paying customer it was a rip-off, like something you would get on a canape. The chicken was merely 3 tiny skewers stuck on a wooden stick no meat at all. The dumplings were tasty but again very small. The mains of bbq duck arrived which was again very small for a main course charged at £11.50. There was hardly any meat on the plate, mostly semi-cooked duck skin. We had to order rice separately which was ok but another extra charge. We were shocked to find they charged us £4.50 for some prawn crackers which the waiter offered and having dined in many east-asian restaurants before I assumed was complimentary! No ambiance, crappy portions, average taste. My mint tea was merely a pot of warm water and some dried mint leaves. A bottle of beer was an extortionate £3.50! And the fact nobody was around made me question whether they gave us such small portions on purpose because of our tastecard as we had nothing to compare it with. The bill came up to £31 with the taste discount and a £5 undeserved service charged on top of that. We were only there for about 40 minutes and the waiter was slightly rude. No point kicking up a fuss we left and vowed never to return again!! Stick to thai square for good thai food and atmosphere!
Had a really bad experience at this restaurant. It looks nice and cosy but the staff is rude. They accepted the Taste London card but after added a huge service charge. We ordered many dishes and drunk some beers. The menu read "beef fillet" stir fry when the beef was like chewing leather. When we refused to pay all of the inflated service charges (agreed to pay some) we were told that was because we were given a discount; when we insisted the charges were optional the waiter said they didn't accept debit cards. Nothing like that was on the menu. Never again. Avoid!!
I've been here twice now and the food/service has always been good. Squid starter was very crispy and tasty BBQ duck was the star, rack of lamb curry was well presented. I recommend you make a reservation for a new thai resturant, they won't let you down.
We have tried various other Thai restaurants in the area but none have compared to cafe De Thai in terms of quality of food. At cafe De Thai, even it's just opened, when you order king prawns, you get very large king prawns unlike many other restaurants. Also the lovely dish is BBQ duck which is really fantastic both taste and size of portion.
Service has always been good and owner is a great host who regularly comes and has a chat with us when we have finished our meal.
Last saturday we are 5 went to portobello market and then get lost at all saints road, we just found new Thai restaurant, Cafe' de Thai, the venue is really nice, we sat by the window, really romantic. The food was delicious. Recommend the mixed platter, Chic chic, and BBQ duck which really awesome.
