I have been to Cafe Rouge at Victoria Place on various occasions. The food has until my latest visit always been reasonable - however my latest visit has somewhat tainted my view of the restaurant.

We had been sitting at the restaurant when we noticed two friends walking by the restaurant, which is situated in an airport style eatery area above Victoria station.

We were mid conversation with our friends when the manager interrupted us and said we would have to move tables because he needed ours for a large party that had booked. We therefore had to stop our conversation midflow and move table. The party had not turned up by the time that we left.

When my steak sandwich arrived, it was very chewy and fatty. When I was asked if the food was okay, I mentioned this and the answer I received from the waitress was that it was the same meat as my partner (who had ordered a minute steak) had had. This was not an answer you expect to hear. It is like saying that the meat was from the same cow or herd - this is of no relevance to the particular cut on the plate.

When we paid the bill, we were given a discount - but by then my experience of the restaurant was soured!

Treat this restaurant with caution. Clearly the staff are not trained in how to look after customers properly!

I don't know where in London (and at a busy railway station) you can eat well - and consistently well - for about 15 quid incl. a glass of wine. The French menue is authentic and all dishes are well presented with good honest quality food. The Mussels in wine are truly delicious, the French fries crisp and tasty and the selection of chocolate desserts outstanding! The decor is cosy - although one side of the restaurant is open to the shopping and sitting near the outside area is less so. But that is the only draw-back I can think of. The big advantage to a number of restaurants I can think of is, you feel you get real value for money and you leave the place happy - rather then feeling "done" and taken for a ride.
Try it but don't all come at once - I still want to be able to pop in on a Friday night and get a table without booking!

Cafe Rouge is a lovely restaurant. The food is delicious. I've been to Rouge for both drinks and food and have always had a good time.
