The ViewLondon Review
Cafe Sol’s lively decor, budget friendly meal items and vast selection of cocktails make this a great place to have a filling meal or just wind down from a tough work week.
The Venue
From the exterior the huge windows and bright orange awnings are welcoming and make you curious to see what is going on inside. Inside the decor is keeping with the Texan/Mexican theme with brightly coloured walls of yellow and orange. Festive twinkle lights line the windows and various almost life-sized paper mache cacti decorated with Mexican sombreros are placed around the dining area.
The Atmosphere
The staff are attentive and quick at taking your order and getting your meal brought to the table. This seems to be a place that appeals to families, couples, groups, and just anyone looking for a meal or some drinks with Tex Mex twist.
The Food
Choose from starters, grills, Veracruz seafood, fajitas, barbecue dishes and burgers. The lunch special includes a starter and main for £5.95. One of the starters, cream cheese filled jalapenos (£3.95) are surprisingly not too greasy or heavy, but the salsa dip served alongside could be spicier and thicker - it tastes more like a sweet tomato sauce than a salsa. Classic nachos (£3.75) are a generous mound of tortilla chips topped with gooey, melted cheddar cheese, sour cream, jalapeno peppers and guacamole. The tortilla chips are salty and crispy but the guacamole could be much fresher and chunkier.
For mains, a good option is the vegetarian chilli(£7.95) which combines, peppers, green beans, mushrooms, carrots, mange tout, baby corn, onions, and courgette in a thick and spicy red sauce. These aren’t the usual vegetables found in a veggie chilli but the dish is filling, tasty, and satisfying. It is served with a side of grated cheddar cheese, chopped red onion and tomato, sour cream, guacamole, tortilla chips, and Mexican rice. The rice seems to be Spanish yellow rice with peas and is pretty bland and lacking in taste. Chicken enchilada (£8.95) is filled with shredded, tender, chicken breast and tons of cheddar cheese and is all rolled up in a flour tortilla. This dish would have been much more authentic and tastier if a traditional corn tortilla was used instead. A spicy tomato sauce is served on top which adds some fire and heat. Guacamole and Mexican rice are served on the side.
The Drink
After your spicy meal you are sure to be thirsty, and Cafe Sol has many drinks to choose from. Margaritas are sold by the glass or pitcher and range in prices from £4.50 to £19.95. Or, if you are feeling like something a little more exotic than order drinks from La Cubana Cocktail menu such as the Acapulco Sunset, Pink Mojito or Amaretto Coco Cream. A full range of beer and soft drinks is available as well.
The Last Word
If you have a hankering for some good stick-to-your-ribs kinda grub than saddle up the old horse and ride on over to Cafe Sol.
