The ViewLondon Review
The Titanic cafe is located in the middle of Islington’s busy Chapel Market close to the N1 shopping centre. A popular venue with local people, the Titanic stands out from other cafes in the Angel area due to the large food portions served and exceptional customer service.
The Venue
Unremarkable from the outside, the Titanic has a clean and bright interior with ample seating often providing an area in which tired shoppers can grab a tea and rest their legs. The mixed clientele generally consists of older customers who can be seen reading the day’s newspapers, families or hung-over students refuelling after a heavy night out in Islington.
The Atmosphere
The Titanic is a relaxed venue where visitors are given time to select food from an extensive menu. After eating staff noticeably give diners time to remain seated without ever feeling rushed, even during busy times such as weekend afternoons. The radio plays mainstream chart music at a low level in the background.
The Food
Simple well cooked food is the order of the day here. The number of food options on the Titanic’s extensive menu is impressive with dishes ranging from light salads to a substantial mixed grill made from lean meats. Set breakfasts, many priced under five pounds, are a popular choice for diners and something of a speciality here. There are around 10 options to choose from all served on large oval plates that are full when served. Breakfasts range from a filling full English to beans on toast. Vegetarian diners are not forgotten with three specific veggie breakfast options listed on the menu, equally large when served with vegetarian burgers, sausages, thick cut chips, mushrooms and much more to choose from. All breakfasts are served with white bread or toast and complementary tea or coffee.
Specials of the day are displayed next to the front counter and typically include a roast dinner, fish dish and a pasta option. The spaghetti Bolognese is created with soft pasta cooked for just the right amount of time, a thick tomato based sauce with pepper and fragrant oregano with tender minced beef cooked to perfection. Other simple pasta dishes are also available to choose from.
A number of fish dishes are also on offer at the Titanic although this is subject to availability due to the cafe’s use of fresh ingredients. Fish and chips are served swiftly, with a long piece of lemon garnished cod covering one side of the large oval plate accompanied by well cooked thick cut chips and mushy or processed peas. The batter is thin and crispy covering a thick bright white cut of tender cod free of bones.
Large oven baked jacket potatoes are served here with typical filling choices such as cheese and beans, tuna and sweetcorn and spicy chilli available. These are served with a simple salad of mixed lettuce, thinly cut cucumber and firm tomatoes. There are a number of salad dishes on offer here including a generous prawn salad consisting of large Atlantic prawns served in a sharp seafood sauce with a gentle hint of vinegar and mustard, on a bed of bright mixed leaves. The staff here are happy to create smaller dishes for children and will attempt to create something not seen on the menu if requested.
The Drink
Fruit juices, a small selection of milkshakes, coffees and fizzy drinks are all available here. Diners that choose to stay in the cafe for a while may also find they are provided with a welcome free refill of tea.
The Last Word
Offering excellent value for money in a relaxed family friendly setting, it is easy to see why the Titanic holds its own in an area populated with a diverse selection of eating establishments.
