Oh dear. Where do I start? It was the second time I've been to Canela and will most definitely be my last! It was simply awful! The first thing I noticed was the waitress wearing jeans and trainers (have they never heard of cross-contamination?). We had some chorizo and bread which was nice, but there was not enough bread!
We then asked for the famous Portuguese dish bacalhau a braz, being Portuguese myself I know what it should look and taste like. Unfortunately I was presented with something that not only didn't look but also didn't taste like the dish is supposed to. In short it was horrendous! In detail : Everyone knows that bacalhau a braz should never be done with crisps, let alone with crisps from a packet! What was supposed to be slightly salted cod cooked with eggs was a rubbery poor excuse of an omelet with very, very bland cod instead. To add insult to injury the below bog standard meal appeared to have been cooked on the same plate it was served. Everything was awful!
Canela's food is an insult to Portuguese cuisine, and they should hang their hands in shame. I will never go back, and will never recommend it to anyone else! The worst meal I have ever had in London, and by the way, one look at those pasteis de nata to know they were not fresh. Never, never again!
The service was awful. There were two persons attending people, wearing trainers and extremely serious, making the customer feel awkward.
My salted cod had 7 (seven) bay leaves...a bit too much for my taste. Have of the plate was salad (dressed) and the other have the salted cod dish with much more potato than cod.
I will not come back. There are many nice restaurants out there with service and food far better than this.
There are two Canela's, one in Newburgh St and one in Covent Garden on Earlham Street. I went to the Earlham cafe today after eating at the Newburgh branch for the first time yesterday.
Stating that things are cheap/expensive is pretty pointless as it's relative to what you can afford. I prefer judging things on their value.
Canela has some very nice prepared dishes, some great Portuguese wines and some pretty incredible prices to match.
There's the rub, for a slice of a vegetarian pastry thing (which /was/ a pretty decent size) £5.90 small olive and tomato salad, £5.00 and a glass of red wine £5.00 total over £15.00 - for supposed cafe food.
You won't get away with spending less than £10 here and with wine? well...
It is overpriced only because living in a huge Portuguese community (Stockwell) you can get better food for less so much better value.
Portuguese food is not overly complicated and the ingredients are not wildly lavish and expensive so I can not get why anyone would want to pay the prices on offer.
Food is decent (if a little salty), surroundings are compact and bijou (noisy and squashed in the evening) but you can get much more for your money if you look around.
Going to visit london and reading this review i thought i would hunt this place out .I wish I had not bothered the cherizo tart mentioned was a pile of stoge with no taste whatesoever chicken lasagna bland and all overpriced including the beer.My rating 0 stars
