The ViewLondon Review
Designed by an award-winning team of architects, Canteen has one of those clever interiors that gives the illusion of cold minimalism from the outside but offers a great sense of intimacy and warmth once inside.
The Venue
Boasting pale wood and lots of chrome, there’s an open plan kitchen to the back and long, sharing tables through the centre with smaller, booth-style seating to the sides.
The Atmosphere
On a Sunday evening many dishes tend to have been depleted during the day by the trade generated from Spitalfields Market, which Canteen looks onto: a lack that is simultaneously annoying and reassuring.
Canteen is glass fronted and sided, so it's no place for those seeking privacy from the external world.
The Food
Hearty, simple, locally-sourced food cooked to brilliance. Orders take a markedly long time arriving but strangely this leads to a sense of excitement rather than irritation.
Canteen offers an extensive breakfast menu which is nothing short of exemplary.
The fish of the day is also superb and tends to be beautifully light. The ginger bread and quince pudding is a veritable treat, too.
The Last Word
Canteen displays all the markings of a flagship concept that should definitely be rolled out, appealing, as it does, to just about everybody’s tastes and ethics.
