I attended TheCanteen with 8 other people yesterday. We were given low rather uncomfortable chairs with very low backs though one of our party with back problems was given a replacement. The food at Canteen includes some british favourites. I chose 3 starters rather than a main. The potted duck was tender and the portion was reasonable. The Picalilli was particularly unusual as it included green beans. The Deviled kidneys were plentiful and rich and in both these dishes there was plenty of fresh toast with bits in. The Cashel blue, chicory, pear and hazelnut salad was really overpriced but there was no arbroath smoky left so I had to think of a dish on the fly.

I also had a portion of roast potatoes which were excelent, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Canteen sells good british vood in the main. I think it is however a bit over priced and the menu is a bit uninspiring at times. 2 people had shepheards pie and said it lacked meat and had too much mash. The treacle tart was sweet but not sticky like it should be. I had cheese cake with nut brittle. The base was not crispy at all and british cheesecake should be crispy.

Generally then I think the food was acceptable with some real high points but it is a few pounds overpriced. Staff were excelent though I must say. They were helpful and attentive without being in your face. In general then the food is slightly pretentious as it is overpriced and it is really not anything like a propper Canteen in any other way than the fact that it is not particularly comfortable. The food was quite edible though and staff were helpful and they all spoke decent english.

Loved it! Great food and smiley staff..... Definitely worth a visit

Excellent addition to the area, the food at Canteen is good honest cooking, right up my street. I had trouble choosing what to have it all looked so good! Will return soon...
