The ViewLondon Review

Authentic Italian cuisine, impressive decor and a staggering view of Tower Bridge contribute to making Cantina del Ponte an essential visit for those who wish to stroll further out than the West End for their meal.

The Venue
Cantina del Ponte, situated at Butlers Wharf, is basic in its choice of furnishings, but the attractive mural of an Italian marketplace that takes up the entire back wall certainly dismisses any accusations of mediocrity. An enticing riverside terrace is on offer for cool summer evenings and the looming presence of Tower Bridge is not so much a view as a guest to your dinner (albeit a welcome one). Its glorious location has even been used in a scene from Bridget Jones Diary.

The Atmosphere
Cantina del Ponte can be a busy place during the evening, and on a Friday night there’s a general feeling of urgency about the place – a desire to hurry things along. However, this is never employed by the staff as an excuse to be hasty, rather the management and waiting staff are consistently attentive and jovial. The sun setting followed by the bridge illuminating at night is magnificent and contributes greatly to the experience of a terrace table here.

The food
There may not be the most lavish and elaborate Italian recipes available in London, but the dishes are very tasty and presented beautifully; they include dishes such as spinach and ricotta ravioli in a cream based sauce and veal escalope saltimbocca, a rewarding dish of ham and cheese cooked and presented as an open sandwich with the veal escalope as the base. Given the commitment to authenticity, don’t expect overly-generous portions or garlic bread side orders, but do expect mouth-watering desserts, in particular the gorgeously rich and guilt-laden Tiramisu.

The Drink
Meals such as these must be accompanied by a good bottle of wine and the Cantina del Ponte boasts an extensive cellar with a selection of wines to compliment each dish.

The Last Word
If you’re tired of the conveyor belt mentality of some Italian restaurants, Cantina del Pontes passion for rustic, Italian food is the perfect antidote and an ideal place to meet friends or visit after work with colleagues.
