The ViewLondon Review
Renowned Italian restaurateur Antonio Carluccio brings the finest regional Italian food to his chain of Italian cafe-cum-delis, and the St Christophers Place location is no exception.
The Venue
Situated just a hop and a skip from Oxford Street, Carluccios Caffe is tucked away on a little side street that encompasses many bars and cafes. The venue is pleasantly decked out in cool and contemporary blue and white surrounds, with seating in both upstairs and downstairs sections. The entrance comprises the renowned deli which features all sorts of olive oil, vinegars and a wide variety of cheeses and olives.
The Atmosphere
There’s a constant flow of diners, whether it be yummy mummies with the decked out kids or couples looking for a cheap eat. Unfortunately, as a result of the brand’s immense popularity, this location can be quite busy and noisy and service can be on the slow side.
The Food
Starters include a thick and rich soup of pasta, creamy borlotti beans and vegetables drizzled with olive oil, an even creamier smoked mackerel and horseradish pate served with toasted bread that tastes like it was made fresh that very day. Also try the interesting duo of deep-fried rice balls filled with meat ragu and melting mozzarella.
For mains choose from a crispy breaded chicken breast which as been flattened, breaded, fried and served with green salad or the popular penne giardiniera. This is Carluccio’s own Pugliese penne with thin strips of shredded courgette, chilli and deep-fried spinach balls. There are also specials and a range of risottos, pastas, salads and larger dishes of char grilled sirloin steak with rosemary potatoes and lamb stew with cannellini beans. For that sweet finish try the chocolate meringue with raspberries and fresh raspberry sauce, vanilla-flavoured pannacotta served with candied orange or one of Carluccios authentic gelatis.
The Drink
You really have to be a lover of all things Italian as the wine list is dominated by reds and whites from Sicily and Carluccio’s own Puglia region. Sample an aromatic and fruity Sicilian Viognier or an intense Nero d’Avola. Desserts are perfectly complemented by strawberry, bitter chocolate and vanilla-flavoured arabica coffee.
The Last Word
Carluccio’s passion for top-quality Italian produce is very much in evidence at his ever popular chain. Try this location if you’re a fan.
