The ViewLondon Review

The Carnaby Restaurant provides reasonably priced, delicious food in one of the swankiest hotels in the capital.

The Venue
Located off to the side of the Courthouse Hotel Kempinski, Carnaby Restaurant is a stone’s throw away from the always packed Oxford, Regent and Carnaby Streets. With its pale yellow walls and red and brown accents, the restaurant feels warm and welcoming. The cosy and intimate feel is nicely offset by some modern touches like paintings and funky light fixtures.

The Atmosphere
Service is very friendly and efficient, and the colours of the restaurant give it a very comfortable and homey feel. Clients are mostly posh hotel guests and local office workers stopping by for lunch, as well as pre- and post-theatre diners looking to take advantage of the set menu and the restaurant’s proximity to the London Palladium.

The Food
The menu is heavy on grills and steaks, whilst the specialities include adventurous dishes like braised rabbit legs with garlic and thyme and oxtail stew. Carnaby Restaurant also has a reasonably priced set menu, as well as separate menus for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea.

Meat fans shouldn’t miss out on the grilled beef fillet, five ounces of tender and juicy meat you’ll want to cut into tiny pieces just so it’ll last as long as possible. The grills all come with a choice of sauce, like red wine jus, tomato salsa and a lovely sharp horseradish, as well as a side dish of starches, vegetables or salads. The wild mushrooms are a surprising mix and are highly recommended. The restaurant also does a wonderfully creamy fish pie, stuffed with haddock cod, prawns and well-cooked calamari, all topped with a layer of fluffy mash. If you have room for dessert, the gooey and rich chocolate fondant that comes topped with nuts and a generous scoop of fresh cream is one of the restaurant’s most popular choices.

The Drink
Wines are your best bet here; although the wine list isn’t particularly long, it’s perfectly thorough and a good mix of different countries with prices ranging from about £20.00 to about £50.00. If you’re not a wine fan, Carnaby Restaurant also carries Heineken, Tiger, Corono, Nastro Azzuro and Grolsch beers.

The Last Word
The beef fillet is surely one of the best tasting and best value in the capital, but the high quality of the other dishes guarantees that the Carnaby Restaurant is more than just a one trick pony.
