Its my first time here and god from the outside it did not look much and walking past here most days I popped in to check it out and the interior design is breath taking. The food well where to start? the set menu which we selected from did not disappoint it had the best tasting dishes I have tasted in a long time, The only down fall was that one of the dishes had a tad to much spice for my liking.
The service was great and it was quick.
Champor champor is a hidden little gem tucked away behind london bridge so if you do pass here I do recommended it!
My husband and I went here on a recommendation for a romantic evening out with great food. We were not disappointed. We had the special mezzanine 2 seater table which was very quaint and cute (although I think would get quite hot in the summer with a full restaurant). The service was truly impeccable - discrete but efficient. The food was superb - tasty, imaginative and filling. The black cardamom and green tea creme brulee and the chocolate and Vietnamese black rice liqueur cheesecake were a heavenly way to end what was a beautiful evening. Our first time but definitely NOT our last.
I don’t get the point of restaurants like Champor Champor. Malay food is already fusion. So what is Malay fusion? Confused, that’s what.
I’m normally a fan of Southwark restaurants. And I love Malay cuisine, having been introduced to it with the wife, on our first holiday together. So I went to this one with high hopes. The décor inside the place was lovely (it’s telling that most of the reviews spend at least half their time banging on about wallpaper and whatnot) and there was nothing wrong with the service either, which was hospitable. But then we ordered cocktails. Can’t tell you what I ordered exactly, but we were with a big group so I got to taste most of what was on the menu. Astringent is my abiding memory of all of them. Whoever mixed them has an odd palate, with the sweet/sour/spirit combination all wrong.
Next was soup. Actually, not bad lotus root soup, with an aromatic broth. May be things aren’t so bad then? Unfortunately things were. The wife wasn’t so happy with her starter for example – something in a fish and chip shop style batter masquerading as tempura, think Miriam Margoles’ overdub of Monkey's Tripitaka (not in the good way). And then there were the mains. I ordered the “Satay Marinated Carpaccio of Ostrich” – one of the restaurant’s supposed highlights. To be fair, the ostrich itself was blameless. It was lightly seared and tender, if lacking any charcoal. The problem was the sauce, which was gloopy, overly sweet and lacking any of the aromatic quality necessary in a good satay sauce. In fact none of what I dug my fork into that evening (either from my own plate or anyone else’s) matched the lotus broth. Much of the menu sounded positively hideous (Cream of Cantonese Roast Duck Soup anyone?!)
Oh, and you can’t eat A La Carte - or the wallpaper.
It wasn’t a dreadful evening, and the staff were really quite nice, but it was everything that’s wrong with poncy fusion cooking. I certainly won't be taking cooking classes there.
A friend and me were looking for somewhere near London Bridge that took the View Card and decided on Champor-Champor. We were pleasantly surprised. I've not eaten a lot of Thai food but the food here was great; interesting dishes packed with flavour and the service was excellent. Definitely worth a vist.
My boyfriend recently booked the mezzanine table at this restaurant for my birthday; it is a secluded balcony situated higher than everybody else in the restaurant, only seating the two of us- very romantic! That definitely did not disappoint.
The decor is really unique and quirky and when we entered the establishment we were both impressed.
Unfortunately the food we ordered did not deliver, some of the combinations of flavors were bizarre but worked well, others however were overpowering and did not taste nice.
Both our main courses had a strange concoction of ingredients but were at the same time extremely bland.
In addition I would not recommend the beef dish for the mains - my boyfriend was very put off by the nervy pieces of meat.
It is clear that this restaurant has a nice atmosphere and is always busy, but it is also very obvious that the chef tries too hard.My boyfriend was very disappointed :(
My experience of Champor - Champor has been brilliant. The food has a blend of fantastic flavours and the menu is changed on a regular basis. There is always something new and exotic on the menu. The portions are not big but still filling.
The service at Champor - Champor is friendly and there is always a fantastic atmosphere. The decor is outstanding - and always a good out of the way hideaway to surprise a partner and friends with.
Champor - Champor itself was suitably located, and the interior decor was eye-catching and intriguing. Besides the waiters walking off when I was trying to speak with them and other waiters not knowing the menu, the food was interesting, the decoration was beautiful and presented excellently. To eat, on the other hand, the food was bland and very boring, and the portions merely lined the sides of my stomach.
The granitas were particularly tasty (worth a try), and the tofu was fantastic yet the menu had very little to offer!! For someone who likes little portions and is not affected by poor service (with waiters forgetting to bring out starters) this would be a fantastic place to visit. However those of us that judge a restaurant by food AND service this may not be the best option.
