The ViewLondon Review
This award winning Thai restaurant serves up traditional dishes in an intimate Central London location.
The Venue
Eat Thai is located in the middle of the quaint St. Christopher’s Place within close proximity to Oxford Circus. This place is smartly done up with contemporary Thai furnishings coupled with authentic Thai and Cambodian artefacts. At first sight the bright green walls and yellow bowls of hot pink flowers may not prevent you from making a quick exit stage left due to the ghastliness of colours but yet these bright colours add a touch of spice to the restaurant with comfortable leather chairs and brushed walnut top tables. Downstairs is a minimalist paradise with brushed white walls, white tiled floors and subtle partitions that throw up a clean and sharp finish.
The Atmosphere
Downstairs is the more intimate and romantic of the two areas. This restaurant is easily comfortable with entertaining work parties as well as catering for couples. The staff is efficient and rapid on the whole but you may need to ask on more than one occasion for things to happen. The cosy and understated atmosphere is what has made Eat Thai grow.
The Food
Eat Thai’s head chef has over twenty years of experience and comes from a Bangkok five star hotel where he cut his trade. Everything is freshly prepared using original Thai ingredients and the recipes cover a wide range.
For starters sample the chicken skewers which are perfectly grilled infused with several herbs and finished with a spicy and potent chilli sauce. The mushrooms are delicately cooked and fried in a tempura style and served with a sweet plum sauce that’s rich and sticky.
Meanwhile for mains try the chef’s recommendations which are the deep black sea cod comes with spring onion, ginger and soy sauce. The cod is well cooked and steamed perfectly and the ginger and soy are the perfect accompaniment of flavours to compliment the fish. Another dish is a lamb stir fry which is accompanied by wild ginger, garlic, peppercorn, basil leaves and chilli and finished in an oyster sauce. The sauce shows technical ability as it is superb and not at all gloopy while the spicy flavours from the chilli and ginger mix well to lift the flavours of the meat.
For dessert try a raspberry and mango sorbet which is presented on a crunchy brandy snap basket and served with fresh fruit. There is also a baked banana with a tart honey sauce and coconut ice cream. The ice cream is refreshing and will remind you of sipping on a Pina Colada somewhere in the Caribbean.
The Drink
The wine list is brief but reasonably priced covering some solid choices from Europe and featuring all the usual suspects as far as cold drinks are concerned. There are also some hot options including herbal that are sure to revitalize and rejuvenate you.
The Last Word
Another competitor for the uber popular Busaba Eathai. This restaurant is a smart outfit in the heart of Soho that will have you returning for second helpings.
