This Cheers themed bar manages to sidestep the somewhat tired, cheesy theme tag one might associate with it and surprises customers with a fun night out in what is actually a rather nice setting.

The Venue
Cheers sits at the Piccadilly end of Regent Street, firmly entrenched in the heart of London’s tourism district. Quite why anyone would come to London and want a lunchtime trip to 1980’s Boston is not explained, but that doesn’t seem such an issue when you step inside. The bar, on entry, is somewhat quiet and feels slightly like purgatory. However, it’s best not to judge too quickly, which you realise as soon you are whisked into the delightful main bar. The centre of the room is dominated by a square island bar (which ticks the box for the Cheers theme) and outside this there are high stools, and an outer ring for a higher up seating area. The decor is done out like an upmarket New England bar, with plenty of dark wood, floorboards and old-fashioned wall fans; somewhat akin to an Abercrombie & Fitch store. There are a lot of TV screens showing ESPN. For those who want a baseball fix, Cheers is a good sports bar choice.

The Atmosphere
The atmosphere in Cheers is fun and friendly (even if everyone doesn’t know your name). The staff are incredibly attentive and polite without being overly formal. People come to Cheers for a good time, and there are a lot of suited men here out of a night with the lads after a tough week at work. There are also groups of couples and a few tourists who are obviously seeking refuge from the bewilderment of Piccadilly in this comparatively peaceful haven.

The Food
Cheers serves up a slightly cheesy menu, with every meal themed to a character of the show. Having said this, the meals are actually delicious and come in very generous portions. The menu is dominated by American fare like burgers and ribs, but the staff are always happy to recommend their favourites and advise you on choices. The prices are fairly expensive but not a horrific surprise considering the area and clientele.

The Drink
Offering up a range of regular and frozen cocktails, all of which are incredibly good. This place specialises in drinks and is doing well from it by all appearances. The prices are around the £8 mark for cocktails, which is fair for the area.

The Last Word
Cheers manages to shake off any cheesy associations with a TV theme bar, and become a venue in it’s own right. Providing a healthy dose of sport, and a delicious plate of food, this is a good location for a fun, wholesome night out on a larger budget.
