I think there is one very unfair and lengthy review here. I have been to this place when it is packed and staff (there seems to be lot of turnover - esp. waiters) rushed off their feet but cannot believe they would leave a table of 17 with only 2 spring rolls for 20 minutes, etc.

They do have very reasonably priced food, freshly cooked and, to most part, tasty. Drink/juices leave something to be desired as they comes in plastic cups and are sometimes watery. Buttermilk especially - totally insipid.

Breakfast, however is excellent. Would recommend to anyone - esp. those with gluten intolerance as very little of the buffet is wheat based.

One of the places where the experience is not consistent, but food usually makes up for any shortcomings.

I visited this restaurant on Sunday 7th March 2010 with my family, We sat on the veg and non veg side, we decided to move to the other side as there was a more of a selection of veg dishes on that menu. We were told that the table was ready for 17 of us to walked next door, having to find out that the table is not ready, was told to wait for 5 minute....we waited for 15 minutes with our kids getting agitated.

However we finally got seated to a dirty table which had no cutlery, empty water jug from the previous customer. We sat and was handed the menus, we ordered our starters, we received the veg rolls x 2 within 15minutes from ordering.. we waited assuming the rest of the starters would follow..after 15 minutes I asked for the veg rolls to be taken away as they had gone cold while we waited for the rest of the food as it would be impossible to spilt the 2 veg rolls between (similar to spring rolls im assuming as they never came back) 17 of us. The rest of the starters arrived 20minutes later. We still had no cutlery, I asked 3 waiters for water jug to be filled and cutlery for all of us. We were given the cutlery and water after we finished the starters !!

We ordered the main before the starters came as we thought the starters are taking this long so just imagine how long we going to have to wait for the main food. We received one of the dishes which my mum found a long black hair in it, we sent it back. The rest of the dishes finally arrived.
To summarise my 1st experience in this restaurant : -

- prior to attending this place we rang and booked over the phone as we were a big group, I thought it was very greedy of them not to warn us the heating is not working in the both restaurants.
We froze and the poor kids too, was so glad when I walked out the restaurant as it was warmer outside.
- the hygiene is the very lowest I have ever seen, the toilets were in very poor condition, no loo roll, pee on the floor and more importantly not water in the taps..

Reason why the service may not be so great is obvious for even a blind man to see. The place is packed out at all times, at the weekend there is a que stretching into the street.

Under the circumstances the staff do a wonderful job. Clearly the the clientele think that the best South Indian food in town at very reasonable prices is well worth the wait.

Having tried other South Indian based restaurants there are'nt many that compare and my preference is normally North Indian food. Regards.A.S.

Not being a vegetarian, Chennai Dosa didn't really hold that much allure for me but I was dragged along by my girlie so thought it would be rude not to eat. I am glad I did. The food was amazing and I didn't even miss the meat. I'm definitely going back to Chennai Dosa.
