The ViewLondon Review
From the fantastic bread to the wonderful cheese selection to the attractive cakes and cupcakes, it’s hard to find something at Chewies Bakery that isn’t worthy of praise.
The Venue
Bright and airy and yet still intimate, the inside of Chewies contains the best of both worlds, an impossible to resist cake display and a tempting deli counter, surrounded by a few chairs and tables in light wood. Take a seat by the cupcakes near the window or by the cheese display, located a bit more out of sight. Or you can head to the outdoor seating area, open during the spring and summer, and spend an indulgent coffee break outside.
The Atmosphere
The great thing about Chewies is that they are open seven days a week, making it a popular destination for weekend brunches and lunches as well as mid-week coffee stops. The clientele is nicely varied, with Primrose Hill mothers and daughters getting their fix of brownies and hot chocolate, and other customers who look like they’ve just come from a Camden yoga centre, here to satisfy their fresh fruit juice fix. The occasional celebrity can be spotted as well – you just need to sit around and wait and, in such a nice environment, it’s a pleasure. The atmosphere is very relaxed; there is no pressure to clear your table and the lovely staff quickly welcome regulars and newcomers alike.
The Food
Chewies is, first and foremost, a bakery, but the selection is more varied than just bread and cakes. Lunch and breakfast options include soups, scrambled eggs, omelettes, creative salads (such as chicken and mange tout, green beans and sun-dried tomatoes) and sandwiches made to order, all of which are slightly cheaper to take away. The soups (£3.50) come served with a few slices of the bread of your choice for an extra 50p. These are usually of the thick and creamy variety – think chicken and vegetable, clam chowder and leek and potato. The velvety butternut squash, flavoured to perfection, is a great choice – try it with pave noisette bread, which has a complementary flavour thanks to its ingredients of cereals, sesame seeds, hazelnuts and almonds.
The omelette options are the familiar plain (£4.50), cheese (£5) and cheese and ham (£5.50) varieties, but the ingredients are top quality, with the cheese and ham sliced at the deli counter the moment you order it. As for the sandwiches, you can truly be creative with what you want in them. Start with the bread, then add cheese and any other deli ingredient you like. You are truly spoilt for choice with a bread selection encompassing beautiful sourdough, organic brown bloomer, rye bread (about £3), seeded wholemeal demi baguette (£1.10), Hungarian loaf (£2.40) and more. One taste of the bread here and you won’t want to ever have a slice of white bread from the supermarket again. Cheeses are no less interesting, with options like cave-aged cheddar, Morbier, gorgonzola, Barkham Blue and more. Gourmet olives, sun-dried tomatoes, chorizo picante and Napoli salami are also available. Here, even a banal cheddar, tomato and salad sandwich manages to surprise thanks to the quality bread and the great cheese.
The cake display, though, is what will really catch your eye. You’ll no doubt have trouble picking between cakes, cupcakes and French pastries. To start, the cupcakes (£1.80) look and taste lovely. Pick from flavours like chocolate with mint icing, vanilla with Nutella, chocolate with orange icing, chocolate with cookies and cream icing, vanilla with peanut butter icing and more. The texture is firm and yet still moist in terms of both the cake and the icing. Alternatively, you can pick from fudge tiffin (£1), carrot cake (£3), red velvet cake (£3), baked cheesecake (£3) and other options. Two favourites are the deliciously moist and fresh raspberry bar (£2) and the indulgently rich large brownie (£2.50). Even more choices such as meringues, croissants, chocolate cookies (including their signature cookie, the chocolate chewie with pecans (£1.20)), muffins, huge almond croissants and cinnamon whirls complete the list. You will spend a good few minutes deciding what to try!
The Drink
A good selection of hot and cold drinks complement the food at Chewies Bakery. If you want something refreshing, try a freshly squeezed juice (£3 - £3.30); the carrot, orange and ginger has a nice kick and is a perfect morning pick-me-up. Smoothies (£3.30) are also available, with ingredients such as blueberries, mangos, apples and raspberries.
The hot drink selection (£1.80 - £2.80) is rich with options. Beside the familiar lattes, mochas and macchiatos, you can also order green tea lattes, iced coffee and a great selection of teas (£1.90 - £2.50), including flowering amaranth, osmanthus, jasmine and lily, white peony and more.
The Last Word
Chewies Bakery takes all aspects of food very seriously – and what they sell is delicious, too. Perfect for a light lunch or a decadent dessert.
