The ViewLondon Review
Step off the pavement in trendy Chelsea and into a world of alluring style and aromas at Cheyne Walk Brasserie. Top notch service and world class cuisine make this a restaurant out to impress.
The Venue
Cheyne Walk Brasserie’s interior has charm, elegance, and sophistication. Soft French music sets the mood for a relaxing and pleasant meal. The brasserie and bar area is decorated with soft, baby blue, leather booth-style seats that line the walls. The eye-catching focus of the room is the large brick grill where you can watch the chef prepare all of the tempting meats. Chairs are done in dark wood and deep red leather which are a fantastic contrast to the pale blue colour. Elegant ornate chandeliers of crystal and tiny red lamp shades illuminate the room and stand out from the light green painted walls.
If you're looking for a more cosy experience head upstairs to the salon area. Here you will find the same elegant decor as the main dining area but there are added velvet deep chase lounges and an open fireplace - the perfect setting for a cocktail or light meal.
The Atmosphere
Staff are attractive, polished, well groomed and dressed in crisp, light blue, button down shirts which brilliantly match the cushions. They are excellent at making recommendations and care for your every need with the utmost of class and experience.
The Food
Raviole de homard et sa mousse legere sur lit de salsifies (£14.50) is a starter of delicate homemade lobster ravioli in a light foam sauce on a bed of salsify. The raviolis are light, airy and filled with fresh and succulent lobster meat. This is the perfect way to start your meal and leaves plenty of room for the rest of your dinner. Panier de crudites et son trio de sauce (£16.50) is a fantastic starter for veggie lovers. This large wicker basket of crudites (red and yellow peppers, celery, fennel, jicama, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and carrots) comes beautifully presented with lettuce leaves lining the basket and even includes some hard boiled eggs. You are given a sauce trio for dipping of a tartare sauce, balsamic vinaigrette and another creamy dip made with anchovies. This starter should really not be marked as vegetarian, though, since one of the dips includes fish.
Entr'acte (£22.50) is a meat lover’s paradise of 350g of tender rib eye of beef cooked to your liking. You also can choose your sauce and side for the beef - the rich and creamy peppercorn sauce is a fantastic match. Add a side of Dauphinois potatoes and you have yourself a meal fit for a king. Tarte au fromage, asperges et tomates confites (£12.50) is a delicious and satisfying vegetarian main course. This cheese tart with asparagus and sun-dried tomatoes is baked in flaky buttery pastry and overflowing with creamy rich cheese and served with a side of field greens. It seems to be lacking in asparagus and sun-dried tomatoes, though.
Selections de glaces et sorbets (£8) for dessert is a selection of ice creams and sorbets. Try a scoop of the decadent vanilla, strawberry and mango. Crumble aux pommes et groseilles, creme Anglaise (£8) is the dessert to try if you’re looking for something more filling to end your meal with. This apple and redcurrant crumble is served hot in a small ramekin and topped with buttery crumbs. You also get a pot of rich custard cream to drizzle over the top of the crumble.
The Drink
Cheyne Walk Brasserie’s sommeliers have put together an extensive and impressive selection of wines to choose from, including a 2007 Burgoyne Pinot Noir for £40. The bar also has some fabulous cocktails which are best sipped slowly in the chic upstairs lounge.
