Chez Gerard’s newest restaurant is another notch in the belt for the successful chain – well priced food in a convenient location.

The Venue
Tucked away at the bottom of Rupert Street, this Chez Gerard location is well placed for Piccadilly, Leicester Square and Soho – a well travelled location, although the atmosphere outside suffers somewhat for being right near the Trocadero. The restaurant is spread across two floors, with more casual eating downstairs at booths or wooden tables, and a slightly more posh environment upstairs, where there’s also private meeting areas.

The Atmosphere
The different areas of the Rupert Street Chez Gerard means that at any given point the clientele and atmosphere can be completely different. Depending on where you sit, you’ll be treated to anything from a group of friends celebrating to businesspeople wining and dining clients to wandering tourists. One guarantee, though, is the service, which is friendly and knowledgeable. If you’re not too sure of your French dishes be sure to ask for recommendations.

The Food
The French onion soup is a luxuriously rich starter, a thick, dark broth chock full of melt-in-your-mouth pieces of onions and covered with a bubbling layer of cheese. Moules Marinieres, a French classic, is a huge portion of mussels marinated in wine, which taste very fresh and aren’t too salty. The Wagyu beef burger is nicely tender, and although the Japanese breed of cow is known for its high grade meat, it doesn’t taste much different than a regular good quality hamburger. Desserts include French favourites such as creme brulees and fruit tarts. Prices are really reasonable, with most mains coming in at under £13.00.

The Drink
The long wine list (strangely enough, all French) is helpful divided up into categories depending on tastes so that even non wine-connoisseurs can know exactly what they’ll be getting. Prices hover around £15.00 - £25.00 a bottle, although there are some pricier and cheaper options. There are also champagnes, wines available by the glass and a selection of classic cocktails like Bloody Marys and mojitos.

The Last Word
A nice addition to Chez Gerard’s repertoire, and another success in their mission for Londoners to appreciate French cuisine without the frills or the high prices.
