Get away from all the commercial chain cafes and try something slightly more traditional with Chez Nous and you’ll discover what coffees houses used to be like.

The Venue
This little French cafe is ideally positioned across the road from Belsize Park station on Haverstock Hill Road. The two little palm trees that sit outside the front windows mark off the modest outdoor seating area. There is also a board enticing customers with some of its take away prices.

Inside the cafe, it feels very much like a French tea room. This is probably on account of the empty wine bottles that have been used as decoration – lining the shelf that sits high on the walls around the seating area. White paint has been used in places to tame the bare brick walls whilst wood panelling has been used around the counter that sits at the end of the shop floor. Along one wall runs a comfortable bench whilst the rest of the seating comes in the way of standard chairs that can be pulled up to the small tables.

The Atmosphere
Quiet in the mornings, this cafe offers a more authentic feel to some of the more commercial coffee houses that can be found a short walk away. The sensual sounds of soft rock are very soothing in the mornings and gently ease you in to your day.

The Food
The menu is quite diverse for a little cafe. You’ll find and extensive range of dishes that include fish, pasta, salad, omelettes and jacket potatoes. You’ll also find burgers, special sandwiches and some vegetarian dishes. The morning fry up, with the traditional combination of eggs, sausages and toast, looks especially scrumptious.

The Drink
Drinks served include tea and a small variety of coffees. The latte is served in a class mug that shows off the separation that occurs between the milk and the coffee. On top it’s especially frothy - very tempting. If you order the tea, that’ll come in a standard mug and saucer with a small jug of milk. Rather tasty and does what you’d expect a cup of tea to do. A small selection of soft drinks are also available and those in the mood for a bit of alcohol in the evenings will be happy to hear that wine is available as is a small variety of spirits.

The Last Word
Chez Nous doesn’t come across as especially outstanding but they have an old fashioned charm that should appeal to all. Certainly worth a go if you’re in the area.
