The location of Chilli Chutney is fantastic, with a spectacular view of the London Eye, and they offer large portions of basic Indian food.

The Venue
Chilli Chutney’s decor is extremely plain and simple, as you would expect at a fast food establishment. Inside there are about ten tables paired with light wood chairs. Walls are bare, decorated only with a few large mirrors, and painted in tan and a darker shade of brown. Artificial green plants are used to add some life to the decor. There are three display cases for you to choose from, either starters, meat dishes and vegetarian dishes and some special menu items are written on chalkboards behind the counter. The cleanliness of the restaurant could be improved upon, as the floor and tables have bits of food on them. It seems that the best part of the venue is the outdoor seating with prime view of the London Eye.

The Atmosphere
Staff are polite enough but not too friendly – they’re hidden and barely even speak to you. The clientele are mainly people ordering a takeaway, tourists or people sitting outside enjoying the view, so although you wouldn’t necessarily expect Michelin-starred service the level of customer service here could definitely be improved upon as well.

The Food
Choose from starters, curry dishes, salads, naans, sandwiches and desserts. They also serve breakfast and fish and chips. If you’re looking for a takeaway deal try the meal deal for £4.95 including and curry and biryani rice – it’s another £1 to eat in. Lamb seekh kebab (95p) for a starter is average and served in a decent size portion but is not overly flavourful. Chicken seekh kebab (95p) is a bit spicy and seems to stand out more than the lamb version but again is average at best. For vegetarians there are vegetable pakoras (£1.50) served in a portion of five. They’re what you would expect them to taste like but are not too fresh and quite dry – good thing they’re served with three tasty dipping sauces to add some needed moisture. Another veggie choice for starter is the vegetable samosa (95p) which is quite large and spicy. Again, this menu item is a bit dry and could be fresher but is packed with spices.

For a main course you can choose chicken tikka masala (£4.95) which they advertise as Britain’s number one national dish but unfortunately this tikka masala doesn’t stand out in terms of flavour. Chana masala (£4.95) is also bland and flavourless and could definitely use more spices. Vegetable jalfrezi (£4.95) is more of what you would expect, with various mixed vegetables such as peas, carrots, potato, corn and green beans combined in a rich red medium spiced sauce. The pilau rice, however, is clumpy and sticky. A side of keema naan (£1.95) is made of bread that doesn’t even resemble traditional naan bread and is lacking in lamb filling.

Desserts range from Indian sweet dishes for £1.50 to chocolate cake, carrot cake or cookies. The chocolate cake is served in a generous portion but is an otherwise average slice of chocolate cake with chocolate icing. If you are looking for the traditional Indian dessert, be sure to ask as they’re not displayed.

The Drink
Chilli Chutney doesn’t serve alcohol but does have a variety of hot and cold drinks such as fruit juices, lassis, soft drinks, coffees and teas.

The Last Word
Chilli Chutney is an option if you’re looking for a quick and inexpensive Indian meal, but be sure to sit outside and enjoy the view.
