The ViewLondon Review
Proper British fare – think pies and cider – are the order of the day at this charming, simple eatery in the heart of London.
The Venue
Chimes of Pimlico is a rather nondescript restaurant offering little in the way of flourish but plenty of simple charm. The green frontage with a low hanging canopy is bold in its colour, but that’s about as far as boldness goes. Inside, a neutral colour scheme does little to lift the plain wooden tables and chairs but some foliage, a few prints on the walls and a rather grand clock show they’ve put some thought into the appearance of the space. It certainly benefits from the light that fills the room.
The Atmosphere
Being a bar and restaurant there is an upbeat undercurrent to the atmosphere at Chimes, and the staunch, proper grub served on the menus seems to meet with the approval of diners. The staff are friendly and quick to serve, making it a good lunchtime spot if time is of the essence. It also attracts a strong tourist contingent given its proximity to so many London sights.
The Food
Think proper food for hungry bellies with a strong skew towards pie. Chicken pie, lamb pie, steak pie, vegetable pie… you get the idea. Priced at £11.25 they’re possibly not the cheapest pies in London but with unusual combinations including gooseberries and ginger, they're certainly good enough to represent value for money. The steak and mushroom pie is substantial, with generous chunks of tender, rich steak (happily free from too much fat), and plump, earthy mushrooms cooked in a flavoursome, meaty gravy with just the right balance of pastry to filling. If you really can’t face pie then there’s always bangers and mash – the cheaper option at just under £8.
The Drink
Chimes of Pimlico features a standard menu of white and red wines, bolstered by a far more exciting selection of perry and fruit wines. However, it’s their cider selection that they’re really famed for. Alongside high street favourites like Scrumpy Jack, there’s a choice of rare draught and bottled ciders that are hard to find in London – something this venue prides itself on. Cider
and pie? Forget the Ferrero Rocher, now you’re really spoiling us.
The Last Word
Down to earth and humble, Chimes of Pimlico is a breath of fresh air for the area.
