I normally go to china palace (excel) or Yi Ban in Docklands. We went to CB on a Monday for Dimsum. I agree with the below review - it seems all the baby chair clips are broken and had to be strapped =S.
However different opinion as I found the staff friendly and the manager was very smiley.
We had the following authentic and usual weekly typical dimsum food:
- har gau
- chicken feet BB sauce
- pork ribs with black bean sauce
- king Prawn cheung Fun
- custard buns
- bbq pork buns
- Prawn Spring Rolls
- Prawn croquette with salad sauce
- Turnip patty.
All was very good quality and fresh! similar price and standard to Yi Ban and Excel.. or if not bit better. However not the same quality of dim sum as Royal China Palace but as expected.
Probably the worst dim sum experience in London.
First off, we asked for a high chair for our child. We we're given one with torn, broken straps that did not clip together in any way. Looking around I saw another high chair given to another table in the same state. This was not just annoying but I suspect is against Health and Safety regulations. Even if it is not, it is clearly a safety risk to any child using the chair, so thanks a lot for that China Boulevard.
The food: First to arrive were the fried yam croquettes. It is common for these to be pre-cooked and served warm. But these were stone cold and not only that, they tasted sour - the taste of old, bad oil that has gone cold and been left for some time. I strongly suspect they were at least 24hrs old if not more.
Next was the fried turnip paste. This should be lightly fried and brown on the outside and bright white inside. This version was murky and grey inside - again suggesting it was at least a day old (probably more).
Prawn cheung fun cannelloni also had a grey look to it that suggested it was either bought in from elsewhere or prepared a long time prior to serving. The char siu buns had a filling the colour (and a hint of flavour) of takeaway sweet-and-sour sauce.
Glutinous rice in lotus leaves was passable but came in a paper wrapper normally found in shop-bought varieties.
2 of our dishes were forgotten and caused a 20 min wait. During this time we were approached several times to ask if we'd finished, only to have to keep repeating that we were still waiting for the rest of our food. Once they even started to clear our table.
At the end one of the ruder waitresses rushed over and counted the cash right down to the last penny. After seeing that the 'optional' tip had indeed been paid, she actually said 'Good'. Won't be going back.
The food in this restaurant is brilliant. It is not pricy compared to the Royal China’s though not outrageous in any way and well worth it. The service is not hotel or 5* service but is quite exceptional. The atmosphere is very enjoyable with good dim lightings, classic candles on each table soaked with relaxed music and to top up with an excellent river view – you won’t find this anywhere else in London!
I will keep returning to this place as so far not yet been disappointed.
I went to to this restaurant and found the food very bland and the staff rude. Then to top it off I found out this restaurant serves SHARK FIN Soup don't go here.
Watch Gordon Ramsey documentary on shark fin soup - cruel, cruel, cruel.
I am going to boycott this restaurant.
A little bit out of the way to get to. Large airy restaurant with good views of river thames. attentive staff on arrival. Prawn crackers arrived with a lovely chilli dip. really good.
We ordered starters of dim sum basket and crispy belly pork cold appetiser. Both starters were excellent and we both agreed that it looked like we had found a fantastic restaurant.
Then the mains arrived - eventually . Stir fry chicken in spicy chilli sauce. Schezuan prawns and salt pepper squid (one dish) with one bowl of egg fried rice.
Then the mains went back due to the fact that everything was cold. Take two: hot food arrived but unfortunately the heat did not improve the taste.
The stir fry chicken could hardly be described as chicken but more like small cubes of sponge.
It took five minutes to chew a prawn which we were careful to do as rubber is bad for the digestion. They overdone the batter on the squid to a ratio of four and a half part batter, one (minute) particle of squid.
At least it could be said that there was consistency in the main food as there was one prevalent flavour throughout the two meals and it was not a good flavour.
Staff were good re cold food and gave us a free drink (we ordered the same drink we had paid for).
Unfortunately they could not do that magnamously in that when I bought the G&T the tonic was served separately with the drink at the table but the complementary one came out in one glass and was quite obviously flat.
i would keep looking for a good reasonably priced chinese in London or go at lunch and just eat dim sum.
My partner and I ate last night at China Boulevard. This is a superb restaurant with a very courteous and professional staff. The view as we were eating on the mezzanine, right on the Thames, is amazing. Most of all it gave us both the feeling of entering one of those Chinese restaurants we used to love to eat in during our travels in South East Asia - Kuala lumpure, Bangkok, Penang... the atmosphere here in London is very much alike and very relaxing... and this fantastic smell of high quality chinese food!!!
We had a great time, the food was very good and we will be back!
A+ recommendation! Anyone who wants to bring friends and have a good night out eating real chinese food in an authentic and high class environment can hardly find better in London.
The setting of China Boulevard is sensational, giving you gorgeous views of the Thames. The food is really, really good too - authentic dishes are prepared with dedication and care and are certainly value for money.
With the setting it has, China Boulevard is the perfect place to impress a date.
