The ViewLondon Review
If you’re looking for an atmospheric pub in the city that doesn’t empty your wallet, Cittie of York offers a cheap drink in convivial, traditional surroundings. The VenueCittie of York is made up of a cavernous, gothic space, focused around a fire in the middle of floor, which gives you that perfect warm and toasty feeling as the nights get longer. Unusual dark wood booths give you the chance to have an intimate chat. Downstairs, you’ll find a cellar with an atmosphere halfway between a European beer cellar and a medieval torture chamber.
The AtmosphereSituated as it is, right next to the big Inns of Law in the centre of Holborn, it’s no great shocker to hear this place draws a bit of a City crowd. The Cittie of York is one of the younger, fresher feeling pubs in the area with a nice enough mix of young professionals, suits and a few creative types.
The FoodThe food on offer is pretty standard pub grub at excellent value prices. It’s all fairly middle of the road stuff, and the quality isn’t going to blow you away, but at those prices, you couldn’t really expect it to. Still, if you fancy a bowl of chips to line the stomach it’ll serve nicely.
The DrinkThe Cittie of York is fuelled by the brewers at Sam Smiths, which means good quality beer at low prices. In fact, a pint of orange and lemonade will set you back more than a beer. You won’t find any of your big name drinks here, but give their own brands a try and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. There’s a decent selection of beer on tap, including a white wheat beer, which comes recommended. The own-brand cola, on the other hand, has more mixed reviews.
The Last WordRivals the Wetherspoon chain for low prices but without that feeling of having the soul sucked out of you. The Cittie of York is a solid choice for a budget-conscious night out.
