The ViewLondon Review
A restaurant in a stylish boutique hotel which is part of the City Inn Hotels group, the City Cafe offers innovative contemporary cuisine in stylish and plush surroundings.
The Venue
City Cafe has a great location close to Victoria station, the Tate Britain and the River Thames with the London Eye, Houses of Parliament and theatres of the West End only a short distance away. The venue is really an impressive work of art and has been awarded many prestigious architectural awards for being at the heart of modern design.
A brief mention goes to the designers of the funky bar, the Millbank Lounge, which is definitely something to experience for a pre-dinner drink. The restaurant is made up of a series of dining rooms and the a unique works of art enhance the experience. Neutral colours including subtle beiges and creams makes for a modern yet contemporary interior.
The Atmosphere
City Cafe is perfect for bigger groups and celebrations but the ambiance can be inconsistent depending on who your dining partners are and whether the restaurant is full of hotel guests who haven’t ventured out. The very professional and caring staff ensures the dining experience is a pleasurable one.
The Food
The menu is both innovative and modern and features a good selection of fine modern European cuisine. Seasonal menus, vegetarian choices and for the health conscious dishes are also highlighted. Their kitchen menu changes twice throughout the week and showcases City Cafe’s culinary talent. Choose from starters of pressed duck and foie gras terrine served with roast plum bruschetta, fritto misto, which is a mixture of sardines, whitebait and squid with a garlic mayonnaise or dressed Devon crab, wasabi mayonnaise and melba toast.
Recommended mains include a roast Gloucestershire free range chicken served with English asparagus and pecorino cheese risotto, a succulent roast pork fillet, apple and celeriac Waldorf salad with a walnut dressing and rump of new season lamb with pea and broad bean fricassee. To end your meal on a sweet note try the fresh apricot and pistachio cake served with chamomile cream and an intense iced vanilla and coffee nougat.
The Drink
The menus are complemented by a strong new and old world wine list which includes a range of vintage Champagnes, Ports and dessert wines. Try the Lezard Chardonnay which is their own bespoke blend with crisp Grenache blanc or a ripe Long Beach South African Shiraz which embodies mulberry fruit and a touch of eucalyptus, spice and black pepper. The Orange Muscat and flora dessert wine with delicate marmalade and apricot flavours is well worth a try.
The Last Word
A smart choice for casual yet uber-modern fine dining to suit all diets and tastes, City Cafe firmly hits the target every time.
