Simply bad, rude service. Food was OK, but the service was so bad I wouldn't recommend this place. Especially when there are great restaurants on Brick Lane.
I love City Spice. I went with a bunch of my friends the other night and went into the resturant and boy wasn't it busy the were waiters all over the place asking for orders and talking politely is was actually quite hushed. As soon as I gave my orders the delicious food arrived in just 15 minutes providing how busy they were. The food was brilliant in fact it's mindblowing I'd recommend it to anybody especially curry lovers!
I live locally and City Spice is one of my favourite restaurants in Brick Lane, along with Popadums. The food is good, not much different from other restaurants, but I like it because the staff are always friendly and nice. Its very busy at weekends, so I rarely go then (too packed and noisy) but midweek it is fine.
City spice- AKA Shitty Spice 138 Brick Lane. Went there with friends and it was the worst experience I have ever had. I love Brick Lane, I love the bars, the atmosphere, the multiplicity of people and the noise. I have been to many restaurants in and around Brick Lane and am always up for having new experiences, but City Spice is the worst place I have ever been to.
There were a lot of us it was meant to be a lets feel good about each other and our jobs kind of night, we wanted to have a few drinks, a giggle and a tasty curry of a Sunday evening. We arrived at City Spice and sat downstairs, after an hour our food still hadn’t arrived. I went upstairs to investigate- I asked about our food please? I got a number of obscenities and eventually told to ‘sit down little girl’ to which I asked to see the manager and the young man told me he was the manager, then another young man came and joined us, in front of other patrons and retorted that he in fact was the manager, and yes you guessed right, a third came up and said exactly the same. Is it because I’m a young brown girl that the young brown ‘men’ cant speak to me with any respect?
The food arrived and was freezing cold. Some of our party asked for a re-heat, and then the ‘managers’ came down to ask how the food was, some replied courteously that food was cold. The managers, as I have been reading from many reviewers of this restaurant were aggressive and truculent to our guests, asking why we hadn’t asked for a re-heat on our second bite, and continued to be incredibly obstreperous and rude. I decided not to speak, having been already spoken to appallingly.
It then took the two white slightly more older male members of our group, almost 30 minutes to speak to the ‘managers’ upstairs to get some concession. In short, this restaurant is not worth your money, there are so many amazing restaurants on Brick Lane and if you go to City Spice it WILL ruin your experience of what is an exuberant part of London to
I live local and have been to almost all the restaurants on Brick Lane. City spice is ok in terms of service but there is definetly better curry houses on the lane that not only serve better curry but also look better with even better hospitality. Give the rest a try before you rate this restaurant.
My star rating for City Spice should be 5 and not 3!
I treated my husband to a birthday weekend in London with a West End show and curry from Brick Lane. We decided to go to City Spice as the free bottle of wine was tempting. The food was excellent, the place was buzzing and the staff helpful. The gentleman on the door who was also part owner, arranged a taxi for us to get back to a Docklands Hotel. The following afternoon I realised that I had left my camera in the taxi and thought that I would never see it again. I phoned City Spice who in turn called the Cab Co and phoned me back to let me know that the taxi driver handed it in to the Cab office! I was over the moon! We popped in to Spice City to get directions to the Cab Co (Brick Lane Cars) which was just up the road. I picked up my camera and left a big tip for the driver. We also got a take away from the restaurant to have for our evening meal back home in Southampton. The takeaway was heaven! I will certainly use this restuarant again when next in London. Thank you to all the staff for 2 lovely meals and excellent service.

not sure how they got the award for 2009, food wasn't great. Lamb biryani was all spice and no flavour and the vegetarian special tasted of some kind of mystery industrial chemical. The waiter didnt understand or couldnt hear the questions i asked him, possibly because the music was really loud. AND they charged me £4.50 for a cobra! very busy and lots of people seemed to be having a good time though. We broke the rule of never going to into a restuarant that has a guy outside hussling people in and paid for it.
