The ViewLondon Review
Whether you’re looking to inject a bit of class into your cocktail night or party with the best of them in deepest, darkest Soho, Club 49 is an affordable answer to your prayers.
The Venue
If you’ve walked down Greek Street post-5pm, chances are you’ve been invited to Club 49 by a good looking flyerer on commission. Proudly nestled between a couple of fancy restaurants, this venue boasts a cool and stylish décor, free of novelty. Sidle past the doormen (it’s worth getting on the guest list because you might be politely turned away if it’s busy) and park yourself on a snug leather sofa opposite the bar. This is easy on a week night, but on Friday or Saturday you’ll want to claim a spot early on, as the bar is small and seating isn’t abundant. Lighting is atmospheric but not too dark (lilac spheres on the ceiling) and everything – from the wood effect floor tiles to the pictures of Soho adorning the bar - is simple, polished and clean.
At the back there’s a smaller seating area which can be reserved, and comes with its own bar. While the upstairs feels like somewhere you might have a casual meeting with a client you’re trying to impress (when it’s quiet), downstairs is unmistakably a nightclub. There’s seating (but not a lot), a DJ booth and huge images of headphones and a record player decorating the bar.
The Atmosphere
The crowd largely depends on when you go. On a week day evening you can expect to see ladies drinking cocktails and men in suits making business calls – there’s a relaxed vibe, but this doesn’t feel like a typical ‘quick drink after work’ venue - Club 49 is somewhere you go for a reason. On weekends, downstairs is full to bursting with twenty-and-thirty-somethings (there’s an over-21 policy) dancing to RnB and club classics. There really is a party atmosphere here and, on weekend evenings, it’s not somewhere to pop in for a beer on your way home or catch up with a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Staff are terribly friendly and attentive but expect to pay a service charge in exchange for table service.
The Food
It’s mostly party food on offer. Plates of tasty sushi can be bought for £7 and platters for five people for £37.50. If you’re a big group, phone ahead and order canapés (duck paté, quail eggs) – a minimum order of 50 costs £57.50.
The Drink
There’s happy hour Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 10pm, when a double spirit and mixer costs £4.80 and bottles of beer (Corona, Budweiser and Peroni) are available for £2.75. There’s also a wide selection of delicious cocktails, from a sea breeze to a Jamaican mule, which will set you back around £8, or £5 during happy hour.
The Last Word
Club 49 is party venue that guarantees a lively night out in Soho. If you're partying here on Fridays and Saturdays, make sure you arrive early doors to claim your spot.
